of the Chautauqua and tell you what
to do.
“Conditions have changed, of
course, business is organized upon
different lines, competition has
grown keener, and the qualification
for success more exacting.
“That is why we cannot over em
phasize the value of education, ad
apting it in every case to the pecu
liar needs and abilities of the indi
vidual.”
We have quoted the above from
President Barrett’s article of last
week, in which he urged the impor
tance of giving the boy a chance of
properly educating himself.
Especially do we desire to urge
the importance of this matter to the
farmer boy. Farming cannot be
made „to pay by following old
methods. Our soil is not so fertile,
labor costs more, the expenses of
living is in many ways higher and
we do not have free access to the
open rangejthat was one day enjoyed.
These changed conditions can on
ly be met by more scientific methods.
| By scientific methods we mean
that method that will bring to the
farmer the gieatest returns for the
amount of capital aud labor invested.
For many years the Fedetal
Experiment Stations and the State
Government's Agricultural Colleges,
and individuals by private expeii
ments have been searching for the
best methods and the combined in
formation from these sources when
carefully studied will' be of untold
value to the boy who is to spend
his life on the farm.
Mr. Farmer, take President Bar-
ett’s advice and give your boy the
chance to equip himself.

A Wonderful Borer.
The most wonderful boring appa
ratus in the'world is possessed by
the great ichneumon flv. It is com
posed of three black filaments, all
extremely fragile, no larger or still
er than a horsehair and about five
inches long. These fit together with
grooves and glide easily along their
entire length. The three when fit
ted together are no larger in diam
eter than a small needle and so flex
ible that a slight breath of air will
bend them. Yet with this remark
able instrument its owner can bore
three or four inches into the hard
est wood. This borer is possessed
only by the female and is her ovi
positor, or egg laying apparatus
Boring, which takes hours to accom
