CATGUT STRINGS.
m
Mow the Tough Sheep Membranes Are
Fitted For the Violin.
“Catgut” strings are made of the
intestines of sheep. The raw ma
terial from the Stockyards is lirsi
thoroughly cleansed of fat and
fleshy fiber by dull knives arranged
on a drum turned bv a crank. Then
the white, tough membrane- that is
left in them is turned over to a
workman, who deftly splits the ma
terial into even strands by bringing
it against the blade of a safety razor
Bet upright iu the table before him.
The next step is to spin the
strands together and place them on
the drying frames. A violin k
string of American manufacture
takes six strands, the European
string four. The strands, which are
at one end fastened to an uptight
post, are twisted together while still
damp and pliable bj\ means of a
spinning wheel. When they are
taken from the drying frame the
strings are cut into lengths,
and boxed in oiled paper for ship
ment.
To polish the strings there is
used a very fine emcrv paper laid
on n grooved aluminium block.
While the strings are still on the
drying frame the covered block is
passed over the strings, polishing
as many at one time as there are
grooves in the block. The process
of making the fine gut strings for
use in surgery or the heavy strings
three-eighths of an inch thick
which are sometimes used for ma
chinery belting does not differ ma
terially from the methods followed
in the case of the strings for musi
cal instruments, except that the
latter are handled with more care.
—Exchange.
Not a Fighter.
“Mv father,” the host says, “car
ried that sword.”
The guest examines the blade
with interest and discovers n stamp
ed statement thereon to the effect |
that the sword was made in 1899.
“What war was your father.in?”
he asks.
“War? Oh, father wasn’t in any
war! He was a traveling salesman
for a regalia house.”—Judge.
Mr. Stacy Smith leaves Monday
for Newnan where he has accepted
a position with the Newnan Herald
and Advertiser.
Very 8hy.
Jack—I tried to teach Ethel how
to play billiards last night. She’s
the shiest girl I ever saw.
Will—How shy, for instance?
Jack—Why, she blushed every
time the balls kissed each other!—
Pock.
Auctions In Japan.
Sealed bids are used in auction
ing property in Japan. There is p.o
shouting. The auctioneer announces
to the audience that he has such
and such a piece of property for sale
and invites bids. Those who wish
to bid write their bids and names on
slips of paper. The paper is folded
and placed in a box. When the auc
tioneer sees no more bids coming lie
opens the box and sorts out the
bids. The highest bid takes the
property.
