Little Folk
BY REV. W. W. ROOP.,
The Kaleidoscope
“For I am not ashamed of the
gospel of Jesus Christ, for it is the
power of God unto salvation to
every one that believeth, to the Jew
first, and also to the Greek,”Rora.l‘16
What sacred truths are con
tained in this sublime declaration of
the apostle Paul, nothing less than
inspiration could have given utter
ance to sueh exalted and holy
thoughts the evolution of which is
like that of the kaleidscope which
is a little instrument that you may
or may not have seen composed of
several different views which ap
pear as we look through the little
lens or glass and see the views with
in, each in its order as in the little
instrument they are turned into view,
each turn presenting a new object
or different phases of the same object.
Now suppose we look at this text
for a little while in a similar order,
Let our faith be the instrument by
which we see what thegospel really
is, as the apostle saw and believed
the holy revelation.
I. We note the divine author, Jesus
Christ, the very first view of the
subject is Jesus in the gospel hold
ing out to tile world the offer of sal
vation, then follows several other
I views as we shall see, respecting
I the efficacy of the gospel to see
which, we need only to turn the
kaleidscope to the next view and
there appears.
II. The power of the gospel, which
the text tells us is the power of God,
this view awakes at once the thought
of the infinite power that made the
worlds, and that keeps the univeise
with all its system of suns and
worlds in perfect harmony, with
whom the mountains are but dust
in his balance, and who holds the
seas in the hollow of his hand, all
this mighty power is embraced in
this glorious gospel of Jesus Christ,
Then there must be some grand
and glorious purpose to accomplish
through and by this gospel which is
tne sum of such power, we there
fore turn again for a further view,
and there appears at this turn, the
great object of this glorious gospel
which is salvation hence we pause
a moment and study view.
IILSalvation, the one subject in
which we all are, or should be most
interested, the power of God, unto
salvation, the power which alone
can save the lost; hut should any
doubt arise as to whom this power
of salvation applies, we will find the
nswer by another turn, and having
arned the kaleidoscope we look
gain and there is the answer, those
./no believe, but may it not be only
for a certain class or few and may
not others be rejected, to this the
answer appears by another turn,
and looking again, may be seen in
bold letters written Every One- so
the offer is made complete and with
out partiality; but that all the world
may come and find a welcome, and
none feel rejected we must notice
one more turn and we look and
IV"To the Jew first and also to the
Greek,” at this turn we see the
order in which this gospel of sal
vation was given to the world, first
our Savior came to the Jews who
were hispwn people nationally, for
our Savior was born a Jew, his
mother Mary, was a Jewess, Joseph
the husband of Mary was a Jew,
but the Jews did not recognize him
us the Messiah but as it is recorded
He came to his own (people) raid
his own received him not” John,l:
hut while his own people rej ?u d
him. Yet to them was thegosj ’ of
fered, but also to Gentiles, the ■ r n
at this last turn is revealed the imle.<
in which the world has been and is
being blessed with the offer of; ul-
vation through the gospel.
Now these several views . r 1
the most beautiful and in; ' ,g
scene upon which we ate pen i.
to look: and which we can se
by faith as our instrument t
which we catch the sev i v
of the text—I .The gosj e’
Christ—The II power of 1
to salvation—IV, To eve.
believeth—V, First to tl:
and also to the world -
“While God invites, how blest
How sweet the gospel’s cha ;•
sound.
Then haste 0 sinner haste • y,
While yet a pard’omng Godis fo I.’
