Banana Crops.
A crop of bananas is harvested
on an average every fifteen days
throughout the year. Each thrifty
banana plant has many suckers or
stalks growing from a single root at
the same time. One or more
bunches of the ripening fruit, are
cut from a single stalk, while the
other stalks growing from the same
root are left untouched, and in fif
teen days another of the stalks is
shorn of its fruit. This process con
tinues incessantly during the year.
In July and August it is necessary
to cut off the ripening bunches ev
ery ten days, while in December
and January about once a month is
sufficient, the average throughout
the year being practically fifteen
days.—Mexican Herald.
Easily Answered.
“These kids I teach aren’t n bit
slow,” observed a school teacher.
“In fact, I’m afraid they road the
papers. One day 1 proposed the fol
lowing problem to my arithmetic
class:
“A rich man dies and leaves
$1,000,000. One-fifth is to go to
his wife, one-sixth to his son, one-
seventh to his daughter, one-eighth
to his brother and the rest to for
eign missions. What does each
get ?”
“ ‘A lawyer,’ said the littlest boy
in the class promptly.”—Case and
Comment.
An Inappropriate Letter.
After a “command” performance
in Queen Victoria’s time it was the
custom for her majesty’s secretary
to send n letter of thanks to the re
sponsible manager. Sir Henry Pon-
sonby, upon whom this duty de
volved, was the pink of politeness
and, not wishing to make any in
vidious distinction, drew up a form
of letter for general use. As a
rule this plan worked well, but on
one occasion the proprietor of a
troupe of performing geese, which
had entertained the royal children
at a Windsor garden party, received
the following communication from
Sir Henry: “Sir—1 am instructed
by the queen to thank you for your
visit of yesterday and to express the
hope that the ladies and gentlemen
of your company arrived safely in
London and in good health I”

Ridding 8tock of Lie*.
For horses and cattle a good remedy
for lice, according to tho Orunge Jud^
Farmer, is made as follows: Boh fc
an hour eight tablespoonfuls arsenic,
eight tablespoonfuls soda ash and six
teen tablespoonfuls soft soap In two
gallons water. After being prepared
by boiling add enough water to make
two gallons. When cool wet tbe ani
mal all over with a Uttla of It, using a
brush or currycomb to get It Into the
skin. Another good remedy is made of
boiling stavesacre seeds, one part to
twenty parts water, for an hour and
letting It simmer for another hour,
then adding water to make it up to the
original hulk. This applied to the af
fected parts brings quick relief.
It is advisable to repeat the applica
tion In a week or ten days, so as to
catch any new lice from any eggs that
were not caught by the flrat applica
tion. A very common treatment Is se
cured by mixing a pint of linseed oU,
eight tnblespoonfuls oil of tar and
eight tablespoonfuls sulphur. This is
then rubbed on the affected parts once
a dfly for two dnys and allowed to re
main for n few days, after which It Is
washed off with soap and water. In
serious cases the application should be
repented within a week or so. Of
course any of tbe disinfecting fluids
on the market, used either as a spray
or a wash, will do the work satisfac
torily.
The Freshening Cow.
It is not an uncommon occurrence to
aeglect the cow which Is due to fresh
en, whereas if proper attention was
given her np to this time she should
produce exceptional results, says Dr.
D. Roberts, Wisconsin state veterina
rian. Give her sufficient and proper
toed, as this will enconrage the devel
opment of a large udder. A swollen
udder after freshening would Indicate
that she Is a good cow, because It Is
the large flow of milk which causes
the distention of the adder. It Is at
this period that the averago stock
owner is apt to err in allowing the
calf to nurse its mother owing to tbe
fact that the calf has a tendency while
nursing to butt the udder, thus caus
ing increased Irritation. Too much
stress cannot be laid upon the Impor
tance of caring for the udder, It being
advisable to apply soothing applica
tions in case the same is unnaturally
swollen or caked. A mild tonic is of
ten advisable where there is an unnat
ural swelling of the udder, as It has a
better effect than outward applies*
tlons.
