WE WANT A UVE TOWN?
Lets all get together and help make our commu
nity a live one. We all realize the consequences of
poor business, stagnation in commercial affairs, de
preciation of real estate values, low wages, vacant
houses, people moving away, etc.
What we want is plenty of business, money in cir
culation, a live interest in the building of houses, the
sale of lots and acre property and a genuine, healthy
condition of business in our community.
HOW SHALL WE ACCOMPLISH IT?
The easiest thing in the world. Just keep our
money in circulation, right here among ourselves,
and we will create our own prosperous conditions.
In other words, LET’S PATRONIZE OUR OWN
BUSINESS MEN, INSTEAD OF SENDING OUR
DOLLARS TO THE HOUSES IN THE LARGE CIT
IES. Let’s be loyal to our own best interests instead
of helping to bolster up the big monopolistic estab
lishments that are draining our resources of all the
ready money in sight.
It is the aim of the big city houses to drive the
small town merchants out of business, so that we will
all be compelled to send to the cities for our merchan
dise. The big city houses are spending thousands
of dollars every month to accomplish this object.
THEY WILL DO IT, UNLESS WE ARE SENSI
BLE ENOUGH TO STOP IT.
It is up to use to prevent the big city houses from
driving our storekeepers out of business, for several
reasons, the greater of which are that our commuity
will be rubbed off the map if we have no business
concerns and that our ownership of property here
will not amount to anything in this event.
The local stores, to a very great extent, make this
town. The taxes paid by our business men are the
principal support of our schools and churches. It
is the taxes paid by our storekeepers that pay for
the local improvements, for the street lighting, for
fire protection and for all other communistic privi
leges and protection.
Some of the local business men are coming to see
just what the situation is. They are ready ao meet
the competition of the city man. They are using
newspaper space to tell the home folks that they can
give as good values as can the city stores. All they
ask is a fair show. Read the ads in this paper every
week. The prices are always just, and the local
merchants stand squarely behind every article they
sell. Always try Carrollton merchants first. That
will give us a live town.

FABLE OF THE
HOME TOWN
(With Apologies to Goorge Ade.)
By 0. E. JOHNSON.
IN GIBBON (NEB.) REPORTER.
Once there was a Town loca
ted somewhere between Castle
Garden and the Golden Gate
which was Destined to become
a great Metropolis, but Destiny
slipped a cog somehow and
stopped the Whole Works.
After things got well Started
and there were two stores j
where the Weary Ones could j
Settle the great Questions of |
the Day while watching the Cat
hunt Mice in the Cracker boxes,
it became the Fashion to beat
it to the Neighboring town to
Trade because it was rumored
that the Home Merchant was a
Robber.
In proof of this Claim, it was
cited that the Man right here
at Home charged a Cent a yard
more for Calico than the Big
Town Guy did, and even if he
did Trust while the City Feller
made you Cough up the Dough
before Taking, it was No Ex
cuse.
Sure, he paid his Taxes and
helped build the Sidewalks
and Keep up the Town, and the
Schools and the Churches and
the Good Roads, but he orter be
Shot for that as the old Dump
was no good nohow.
He dropped some Pennies
and Buttons in the Plate at
Church to help out the Preach-
whose store clothes were
getting Shiny.
He let them Elect Him as a
Member of the Village Board
where instead of being Paid a
Salary he was Cussed by every
citizen but One. who happened
to be deaf and Dumb.
After awhile the Storekeeper
decided that this Chasing out
of Town to spend the Coin you
made right There was the
Proper Thing because Every
body was Doing it.
So unless the Merchant could
get It at wholesale, he drove
the old Lizzie over to the Big
Town and handed his Cash to
the Geek behind the Counter
who had Superior Mannei’s
and Owed six months’ House
Rent, while the Boss of the
Joint advertised big in the Pa
pers, spent the winter at Long
Beach watching the Bathers
in ten-cent Costumes swimming
in the sands, and in the Sum
mertime he Tore around in a
Big Car with twelve Cylinders
and a Glass Top, while he Shat
tered all the Statutes and Ordi
nances in such Cases Made and
Provided.
As Time went On, business
in Podunk got Worse and
worse, and most of the Varnish
ed trains on the Q. T. railroad
did not even hesitate as they
skidded thru. The Robbers
who ran the Stores nailed up
the Windows and Moved away,
and Great Chunks of Silence
fell upon the Deserted Village
like Horseshoes on an iron Peg.

Live in a Quiet Town, be sure
to Spend all your Coin Some
where Else.
THE EDUCATIONAL SERVICE SUPPORTING LOCAL INTERESTS
TAKE NO CHANCES;
TRADE AT HOME
If your dealer sold cheap
quality goods you could buy
just as cheaply from him as you
can by mail. Prices are based
on quality and you pay only
for what you get. Pretty pic
tures and well worded phrases
may sell you the goods, but
your money can buy only so
much quality.
Your dealer could probably
sell you the same grade of
goods you buy from a catalog
—but if you saw the goods first
you might not consider them
worth the price. Hence, he
must keep a better quality and
his prices are graded accord
ingly.
Avoid disappointment by
trading locally. It’s cheaper
in the long run, too.
The best buying policy. The
community spirit for mutual in
terest. TRADE AT HOME.
CARD OF THANKS
take this method of thanking our
friends and neighbors for their tender
ministrations during the illness and at
the death of our darling father and
grandfather. Wo thank you for every
word of sympathy and especially for
the beautiful flowers, emblems of pur
ity and love. Also, we thank the doc
tors for their earnest efforts to re
lieve his sufferings. Now, when this
sadness comes to you, iis it sooner or
later comes to all, may God’s richest
blessings rest upon you, is the prayer of

CUSTOMER: \ HAVE LIVED HERE ALL MY LIFE AND THESE ARE THE FIRST SHOES I HAVE
EVER BOUGHT FROM A HOME STORE, BUT IT WONT BE THE LAST.
S4L£SiflDY-. THAT IS THE RIGHT SPIRIT FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE INTERESTS
OF THEIR HOME TOWN AT HEART.
FIRST BUT NOT LAST
“Cousin Carrie, who is a saleslady in a large store in the city,
says that many merchants unload last season’s styles and ‘slow sell
ers’ on society ladies who come from smaller towns to do their shop
ping because they are easy marks. She says you can get just as late
styles here at home and can depend on what you buy. The prices, too,
are more reasonable.” Let this be food for thought.
