Mandeville Mills Laundry "Send It To The Laundry” TELPHONE NO. 577—THE WAGON WILL COME Glass in now being made at the Ford Motor Company’s plant at River Rouge and brings the company one stop fur ther in its program to control the man ufacture of practically everything en tering into its products. With the new factory in operation the third nnd largest glass producing unit of the company comes into being nnd the Ford method of making glass, which is a marvel to cxportB and which establishes an epoch in the industry, at tains to higher and more efficient stand ards. One furnace is now operating in the Rouge factory, fires have been lighted under the second and the remaining twoi it is expected, will bo going shortly after tho first of the year. When the factory getB in full operation it will have an annual capacity of more than 10,000,000 square feet of glaBS. The company’s glass plant at Glass- more, Pa., has an annual output of 7,000,000 square feet while tho smaller plant at Highland Park, started about four years ago as an experiment nnd where the Ford method of glass making i was developed, daily produces 9,500 square feet of glass. And all this great production is no- cessary to moot the manufacturing re quirements of the company which at present call for more thnn 20,000,000 squaro feet of glass a year, duo to the increased production of Ford Cars and tho constantly growing demand for enclosed types. Glass manufacture has been placed on a day nnd night continuous produc tion basis through the Ford process and as carried out in tho new factory at River Rougo it presents an accomplish ment, of vast importanco and entailing operations interesting to layman and expert alike. Every fifteen minutes 850 pounds of the mixture is fed into the furnace opening and these constant additions to tho fiery mass within permit a nev er-ending flow of molten glnss from the mouth of tho furnace at tho oppo site sides. As it comes from the furnace, flowing like molasses from a tank, tho molten glass is caught up under a roller, spread c ut and sent on in a solid Tibbon 400 feet long at a rate of 5 feet, 4 inches every minute. Tho molten glass leaves the furnace mouth at 2,150 degrees Fahrenheit, has pooled to 1,000 degrees by tho time it passes under the roller and proceeds through a long oven or lehr under les soning degrees of heat until it mows out at the end at 70 degrees. Th^o it is cut in lengths. Tho roller system, ns devised by tho Ford Motor Conpany, giveB a uniform thickness of tho glass, eliminates the so-called “waves” and saves about 25 per cent of materials at tho vory staTt as compared with other manufacture where great pots of molten glass are lifted from tho furnaco and poured on out. Polishing also is on tho Ford system of continuous production and proceeds along a direct routo until tho glass emerges highly polished. These grinding and polishing ma chinos were devised by the Ford engi neers and Ford products utilized in their construction. For instanco, Ford cor steering wheel connected with a Ford driving rod which extends to a Ford rear axle gear, regulates the polishing discs which is operated by a Fordson Tractor worm drive. Every stop of Ford glasB manufacture is accompanied by tho most exacting standards. All through tho entire pro ccss from tho careful selection nnd pro paration of ingredients until tho glass emerges ready for installation in cars there is constant inspection to seo that every piece is of the highest quality.
