Better Freight Rates.
. In reversing the decision of the
Interstate Commerce Commission re
quiring the Louisville & Nashville
and Western & Atlantic railroads
to reduce the freight rates from Cin
cinnati and Louisville to GrilHn to
the rates charged to Macon, a haul
of sixty miles further. Judge Speer
based his ruling mainly on the
ground that Macon is located on the
Ocmulgee river which is recognized
by the United States government, as
a navigable stream and is therefore
entitled to competitive freight rates.
Macon is at the head of navigation
on the Ocmulgee. Abbeville is lo
cated on the Ocmulgee and more
than one hundred miles nearer the
sea than Macon, and will ask the
commission for competitive freight
rates. With competitive rates Ab
beville merchants and citizens gener
ally would be greatly beneiitted and
would' induce capitalists to locate
here and establish wliolesal mercan
tile houses,
