not seem to realize that their intelli

The statement going the rounds of
the press that the people of the
northern states are freezing while in
Australia they are dying from heat
sounds incredible to the people of
South Georgia, who enjoy a pleasant

I.ost in A Storm.
The severest storm since 188H
swept over the New England Stub s
in the early part of last week. Theile
si ruction to shipping on the coast and
the loss of life and prop<‘rty onshore
were appalling.
It is estimated that the loss of
human life was nearly fifty, while
the destruction of property reached
Hie enormous sum of seven-millions
of-dollars. In Boston alone, the
property loss iH estimated at $1,300,
000. Live electric wires were pros
trated, and men and horses were kill
ed by the score. Boston was, cut off
from communication with the out
side world for -M hours. '1 hotisands
of the poor and homeless in New
York and Boston suffered greatly,
taxing tile capacity of the large
cities to afford them relief.
Mr. Lewis Will Win.
The announcement comes from
Hawkinsville that, Hon. T. C. Tay
lor, a lawyer of that place, will make
tlx race for congress against Hon, E.
H. Lewis. 11 lias been hoped all along
there would be no opposition to Mr.
Lewis as lie lias made an earnest,
true, capable member.
His record for devotion to duty
and the best interests of bis constitu
ent is most gratifying and nothing
can Im brought against him.
Then again it is the usual Democrat
ic custom to endorse a member for
the second term, and this 'rule has
generally been observed and we see
no reason why in this instance it
should not be, as Mr. Lewis lias
made an active and trust-worthy
member, and now that he has had ex
perience, will be prepared to work
more effectively another term for the
interests of his people.
We fed no doubt as to Mr. Lewis
being bis own successor and the can
didacy of Mr. Taylor or any other
candidate will not amount to milch.
— Americas Herald.
The Chronicle fully endorses
ever} word in the above 'article, and
believes that the people of the third
district will endorse it at the polls.
Railroad Accident.

passengers were delayed by the ac

It 1ms been apparent from the
date of the announcement of his can
didacy, that Mr. Candler is the choice
of the people of Georgia to succeed
Governor Atkinson. There are
many good reasons for Mr. Catidler's
popularity, and if for no other rea
son, his declaration that his greatest
ambition is to aid in “establishing
the supioniaey of reunited democ
racy in Georgia” and to that end in
voking the “support of all Georgians
who believe m the cardinal principles
of democracy,'' be should be elec

Mr. Lewis makes no attempt or [ire
tense at oratory, but as a business
man, he watches closely all matters
before the house, and it was because
bis talk was full of good business
sense that it attracted the attention
0 f the republican leader of the ways
an( ] means committee of the house.
..\vimt are our conditions?'’asked
Mr. Lewis, pointing bis remarks at
the gentleman from Maine. Speak
ing for my southern section of the
country, 1 regret to say that is in a
depressed state. We are selling our
cotton at 5 cents a pound and the
people are in debt much more deep
ly this year than they were a year
ago. What is the condition of things
in the cast? We see there in the
cotton factories strikes and 10 per
cent reductions of wages. What
is the general condition of the
country? lias there been any im
provement? I have mentioned two
instances of great depression in the
south and east, and 1 am sorry
that I am unable to point to any
great improvement in any section of
the country. We all recognize that
the advanced price of 'wheat in the
West is due solely to the misfortune
nf the wheat planters of India and
other foreign countries, and the re
publicans can certainly take no cred
to themselves for that.—Washing
