THE REED ERICK WORKS. One of Abbeville’s Most Flourishing Industries. In flu* front rank of Abbeville’s industrial institutions the Reed Brick Works occupy a commanding position. In fact it is not too much to sa\ that in the number of ini-ii employed, the aggregate of wages paid, and in value of mail u fact tired product, litis establishment exceeds any otticr in this locality. And it is needless to say that our merchants fully appreciate the importance of a concern every dollar of whose monthly pay-roll finds its way into tile local channels of trade. The plant is ’ located on the bank of the Ocnndgoe river, just outside the corporate UnuU of tlu* town, and near the line of VW' Georgia & Ala bama railroad with which it is eon neeteil by a spur track; thus having ample shipping facilities Ixdli by rail and water. The properly embraces thirty-live acres a considerable part of which is occupied by kilns, drying sheds* power bouse, tool house, com missary and other buildings and the whole of which is underlaid with a superior quality of Ocmulgee brick clay, famous throughout Georgia :,| ul Florida. The bricks manufac tured lien* are of such excellence and have acquired such a reputation in the markets of this and adjoining states, that, notwithstanding the greatly increased facilities for manu factoring, the concern is unable at present to fully supply the demand. The proprietor of tiiese works. Mr. Geo. W. Reed, is a Michigan man who located here about a year ago. Being favorably impressed with the natural advantages of Abbeville, particularly in his special line of manufacture, and finding tlu* brick works for sale, Mr. Reed purchased them and at once settled down to M| ..j The entire plant was overhauled, new machinery was put in and many extensions and im provements were made' to insure rapidity of work and perfection of It is to-day one of the yards in South Ueor ”' : b but (he demand tor tin* out put lias increased to such an extent that further enlargements have lie come necessary, An improved brick machine of large capacity has been ordered and is now being manufac tured at Day ton, Ohio. Several barrels of the stiff or “long” clay from here were sent up there in order that the machine might be thoroughly tested before being ship ped here. When this new machine is received and installed tin* output of the works will be greatly in creased, and orders of most any magnitude can be executed on short notice. Mr. Reed is an enterprising citizen and his brick works are an important factor in the prosperity and up building of the town. An Enterprising Druggist. Gates and Reynolds deemed it pru dent to find a secluded retreat for a few days which idea was adopted. At midnight last Monday they hoarded a south bound fast train with their prisoner and arrived at Abbeville early yesterday morning. Messrs.
