Here is its sub head, or plat form: “Fublished in the interest of Rochelle, Abbeville and Wilcox county.” Now the New Era has manifested a kindly interest for Ab beville all along we could see that and appreciate it, and so long as it shed iis guardian like rays round about us, as it were, wc felt perfect ly sale from invasions or insurrec tion;!!) But now it has taken its “Irate poi'l-, ’ 11 1 -• cables are cut and thereby all communications arc cut oil'. We are at a loss to know whether this means hostilities or not, anyway wo would suggest that the New Era take down its sign if it has changed its policy. Abbeville Public Schools Closed Last Friday. Tlii! public- schools of Abbeville close cl Inst Friday and the U-ac-hers and pupils are preparing to spend their vacation in various ways and in various place's. The school was the life* anil light of the town, and to say the absence of both these, for a .season, is apt to produce lonesonic liess and gloom, is unnecessary. V> ith this term closed four years of good and useful work for Prof, l*iviitiss and Miss Morgan and one for Miss Melton. It is not easy to forget one who has been faithful and patient in till tilings. The life ot the faithful teacher will live in Hit- hearts and be reflected m the lives of those for whom and with whom lie Inis labored, long after he has passed away. While we will mis . the rays of sunshine, the words ol •• -Lev-.iess and truth, yet wo may expect lo see all these combined in the future lives of our children. Sunday School Union Picnic. The union picnic, last Friday, of the Stinchn Schools was a grand suc cess. A large crowd was on hand and everybody seemed to enjoy the day immensely. The little folks es pecially had a big time in playing various games such as --Fox in the wall. “Many, many Stais,” “Drop the Handkerchief," etc. The older ones passed off the time boatriding, drinking lemonade, walking about and doing us they pleased. There was a a abundance of good things to eat Tliere were a good many visi tors present Cedar Creek Sunday School was weil represented. Abbe vilie appreciates the cooperation Co dar Creek people give us in matters of ties kind and hope this kindly uf filin' i-*i >•, ill continue to exist. War News In Brief. A panic thre&thens the Bank of Spain. --- General Longstrcet says Cuba will , be annexed. Col. W. \Y. Gordon, of Savannah ■ has been made a Brigadier General. The Russian Bear is beginning to show his teeth over the division of the Bliillipines. The army is beginning the inva sion of Cuba and Porto Rico. War Balloons will now be used to locate the position of the enemy. Cervera’s fleet is ' bottled up in Santiago Harbor, and flying reports of a great battle is current, but not confirmed by the department. Col. T. C. Taylor and Tom L. Jelks, of Hawkinsville, will raise a company for Col. Ray’s regiment of volunteers. Hon. William Jennings Bryan organized a company at Lincoln Neb but was defeated as its Commander. This was unprincipled treachery, on the part of the victors. “A Hot Time in the Old Town”— The Monotony Broken. To break the monotony of tilings; Abbeville was treated to an exciting race alter a mad and wild steer Monday. Dr. Moor was loading cattle, for shipment west, at tne depot and all seemed to be content and submissive in their captivity, save one, a higlmiindod steer that refused to immigrate. He decided that he wouldn’t take any prairie grass in his’n—that "Wilcox county wire-grass was good enough for him, whereupon lie made a dash for lib city. Up the streets, through the alleys, across the gardens, terroriz ing everything as he went. Dave Bailey sought refuge in the band stand, Dune Wilcox in Rood Lasse ter’s yard, and you could hear shouts and screams from every side. The steer was in the saddle and no mistake about it. Things were go ing his war for a while, for he hoist ed his head and switched his tail and went pitching and plunging at everything in sight, and seemed to mutter “Cuba Librae" at every jump. The town marshal refused to recog nize the “beligerency” of the animal and ordered out a small regiment of •volunteers” of little, big, large and small, good, bad and indifferent, who stood ready at a moments no tice to repel the invasion, and were soon in hot pursuit of the high handed marauder. Chief Admiral Jimmie Story and his “licet’’ cur (log joined the “volunteers” and soon succeeded in “annihilating” the enemy after the first “bombard ment.” But the steer refused to go or stay after his capture, and had it not been for the “intervention” of J. 1). Lcedy, who came along with lus transporting “cruiser” and took on board the captive, the attempt to place him beyond harms way would have been futile. The enemy once despatched, quiet was soon restored and peace is reigning again in our little city. Attention Teachers.
