A Shooting Affray.
The result of a difference
the Mayor and councilmen as to
number of marshals necessary to con
stitute a police force for the town,
was a serious difficulty between may
or T L Holton and marshal W M
Gates last Tuesday', in which Gates
was shot by Holton while he (Gates)
was attempting to enter Holton’s
office with a drawn pistol and a threat
to kill him if certain papers were not
signed by him authorizing the pay
ment of his (Gates’) salary for ser
as marshal..
There had been bad blood
some time between these gentlemen,
owing to the suspension of Gates
marshal. The council retained Gates
on the force after he had been re
lieved by the Mayor, but the charter
of the town prescribes that bills etc.
due against the town must be ap
proved by the mayor before payment
can be made, Holton, as mayor, de
clined to approve Gates’ order ou
treasurer for salary, therefore pay
ment was refused. This infuriated
Gates, and while under the influence
liquor, attacked Holton ou the even
ing before the difficulty, und threat
ened to kill him is he refused to sign
the orders for his salary. Holtou,
however, stoutly’ refused to do so,
and had it not been for the interfer
ence of friends a difficulty would
have resulted then.
On the next day, Holton partly to
avoid a difficulty, and partly on bus
iness, made ajtrip to Fitzgerald, re
on the noon train, upon liis
arrival he was met by Gates who
seemed still anxious to get his orders
approved and in a threatenieg man
ner followed Holtou to his office
where the difficulty occurrad.os above
stated. The ball entered the hip and
glanced around making only a fle^li
wound.
At this writing Oates is doing well
aud will soon recover. Tt is hoped
by the friends of both sides that the
trouble is over ami oio further diffi
cultv feared.
