SHIPPING ELBERTA PEACHES.
Money In It.
Wilcox county is in the heart of
one of ilie best fruit growing sec
tions of Georgia. It is the borne of
the peach, the melon and the vine,
with ordinary diligence, small ex
pense, and a fair modicum of man
age men'.—this county could realize
as much money in mid summer from
fruit culture as she gets in the fall
from the sale of the cotton crop. All
who have made the experiment in
telligently will coroborate the Move
statement.
Pine City, in this county, has
been shipping peaches for weeks
and is doubtless realizing haudsomly
from its peaches. Fitzgerald lias
shipped large quantities of peaches
and will continue to do so while the
season lasts. She has just finished
her strawberry shipments which
were by the carload, what can be
done in Irwin or other counties in
wiregress Georgia can lie done in
Wilcox county—a hint, etc.

Why Is It?
Why is it that the price of ice has
gone up nearly a hundred per cent
iu Abbeville recently. Why is it
that it cannot lie obtained until 8
o’clock a, in,when only a few days
ago it was delivered at 5 a. m. ? Is
it because competition in tiie ice
business here has ceased? If this
be true, it might pay some other
part}’ to enter the ice business in
Abbeville.

Several cities recently have begun
a crusade against loafing negroes.
It has been found that most of the
crime is being committed by men
who live by their wits. Officer De
Bray of Atlanta was killed by four
negro loafers who lured him to his
death. Although there is much de
mand for farm labor, there are a
large number of loafers, says the
Dublin Courier-Dispatch, who get
food at the expense of some one in
dustry—loafers who shout:
“Taint no use to work so hard,
T geta ga! in de whit folks’ yard.”
An idle brain is tiie devil’s work
shop and there is no doubt that
much meanness is concocted by
those idlers who lay around by day
and steal at night, A determined
effort ought to be made by the mu
nicipal authorities of all the towns
to make the negroes go to work and
stop stealingfor a living.

NO. 25.
Suvethe Hay.
Farmers in the South should mu I,
and save all the hay they can tlii
season. It is evident that, in the west
the bay crop is going to be a short
one. And there will not be such an
abundance of corn as there usually
is. Corn and hay will both com
maud a high price in the near i n
tu re.
The South is a good customer of
the West for botli hay and corn
For all they buy of these crops from
this time until the corn and hay hui -
vest next year they will have to pay
high prices. The agricultural com
missioners of the different slates of
Hie Middle west which are afflicted
by the drought, are telling the far
mers to save all the hay they can
and to sow for another hay crop this
year They see that hard times are
ahead for the drought afflicted sec
tion of tiie West.
The West will have very little, il
any, hay for the South this year. If
it consents to part with any of its
hay it will be because it will be of
fered an extraordinarily high price
for it. But there is no good reason
why the South should continue to be
dependent on the West for hgy, or
rvi ._ --- — ; ;yy ■p)7j(Tiic(7”7itT
it wants of both of the products, in
order to do so, however, it must,
give more attention to them.
Savanna h gets a large amount, of
hay from the West. And yet there
are native grasses in this county
which make excellent hay. Every
farmer in the vicinity of this city
should save all the hay lie can garb
enon his farm. It will pay him to do
so. Unless all signs fail the price
of hay is going to be so high that
comparatively few will be able to
pay for it—that is the price of We
tern hay. They will turn naturally
to the home supply. If that is am
ple it is probable that the price of
hay in this immediate locality will
not advance a great deal, but there
will be a market at a good price for
all that will be grown in this*,section
of the state.
A great many Southern farmers
think it small business to cut the
grass from their wheat fields or po
tato patches for the purpose of iwk
mg hay of it, but, if the Western
drought turns out to be as bad as it
now promises to be, they will think
that tiie hay business is a pretty
big one. — Morning News,
