Controlling Insect Robbers
It seems to us that there could be
no more timely thing that we could
do thzan to spend o little cnergy and
effcrt in making a closer study of the
life histories of insects and methods
by which these robbers may be cen
trolled. It ought not be that some of
these simall things should be depriv
ing many of us of more and beiter veg:
otables and fruits. You can hardly
plant a vegetable but that will be dis
turbed and s 0 many times completely
destroyed by insects. The criticise
is often made and as often heard that
we should all have better gardens than
we have.
It is very probable that the rava
zes of these pests are largely due to
sur being less active in the matter of
better gardens. It seems that we
should not let these small bodies win
out in a contest of this kind. Let’s
learn to combat these pests as we
have never tried before. It would be
surprising to you if you could see the
value in dollars and cents, much less
the improved health, lost through the
damage done in our section to vege
tables alone. It seems that we can
hardly any longer put out these plants
CANDLER OPENS
IN NEXT FIVE YEARS A UNIVER
SITY OF NATIONAL SCOPE IS
PROPOSED.
Macon, Ga., April 24.—The presence
of Bishop Candler and a number of
other distinguished ministers in the
Methodist pulpits today, attracted
many people to hear about the Emory
university, which the bishop is estab
lishing in Atlanta. Bishop Candler is
widely recognized as one of the most
forceful men in the south, and he is
croposing to devote the strength of
his mature years to founding a real
univergity in the south. Alrc:id,v
nearly $3,000,000 have been pledged
for the enterprise and it is believed
that a real university of national
scope, with as much as $10,000,000 of
resources can he in operation in the
next five years.
Bishop Candler speaks most inter
estingly on the subject. He said on
"esterday” ' Greal’'ds has beén the
place of the south in the national life
of the past and important as is ite
present and future mission it is far
behind other sections in the matter of
higher education.
“There are seven universities in tie
United States, whose endowrments ex
ceed $5,000,000 each, but not one of
them is in the south.
“The endowment of Columbia univer
sity, in New York, is $26,000,000, and
its grounds, Dbuildings, laboratories
and libraries are worth equally as
much. That institution alone owng
more property than do all the colleges
and universities in- the south.
“The endowment of Harvard univer
sity amounts to $22,000,000.”

THE CORDELE DISPATCH, W EDNESDAY, APRIL 26, 1916.
':md- expect a fair, much less a maxi
mum return, without our geiting down
to brass tacks and doing some fight

There are many valuable bulleting
on insect life and true and tried rem
cdies for the control of the pests. You
should supply yourselves with this dit
erature and study it -when you get it
and then follow directicns. The sug
gestions for control were not gathered
without giving the remedies thorough
trial. It doesn’t require much of onc’s
time to prepare and apply these rem
edies for insect control.
In connection with the above, it is
coming to be as necessary to have a
spray pump in the home as it is to
have a buggy. One of these almost
indispensible articles can be bought
for from 353 to $2O. As little as you
may think about the matter, an instru
ment of this kind will almost pay for
itself in one year. Get one and give
the bugs, worms, lice, mites and bee
ties a chase about the farm.
The county agricultural agent will
be more than glad to aid you in se
curing bulletins on insects, spray cal
endars and remedies of control.
