Looking at thr Sun. —A traveller in tbe East relates that a pilgrim joined their caravan who had long been journeying from one to another of those places held sacred by Mussulmans. It had been one of his religious acts to gaze constantly at the sun His eyes had become nearly blind, and the muscles of bis neck rigid in that position. Still this earnest but deluded seeker for salvation continued the destructive prac tice. Christian, you arc bid to look at the Sun of Righteousness and be net blinded, but blessed with increase of sight. You have looked to him and been saved from death. You roust continue to look unto him for all that you need to sustain, to pro mote, to perfect the life implanted in your soul. Paul says, “Let us run with patience tho race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.” Happy is it for you, if your spfritual mus cles are already become fixed with perfect steadiness in that position. He that look eth back is not fit for the Kingdom of God. While we gaze steadfastly at the sun, othcrobjects fade from our sight. So let us gaze at Christ the. Sun of Righteousness. And the sinful attractions of earth will fade away and be forgotten before His supremo glory. A Puzzle. Fltet, take a word that docs silence pro claim, That backward and forward still spell the same, Then, to tho first, add a feminine name, That backward and forward will still 6pell the same. An instrument, then, wliitli lawyers oft frame That backward and forward will still spell the same, Then, a very rich fruit whose botanical name. Both backward and forward will still spell the same, Then a musical note, which all will pro claim, Both backward and forward will still spell the same, Tho initials of these, when joined, form a name, Which every young lady, when married will claim, •. And, backward and forward it will still spell the same. Faith li,i.('.stated.—Could any mature Christian give a truer idea of justification by faith than is contained in tho following reply of a little child: In‘Kind Words for Children,’ New comb says : I remember talking* with a very little girl, to whom I put the question ‘Are you a sinner V to which slic prompt ly replied : ‘No, sir.’ •But,’ said I, ‘hava-you never done any thing that was wrong V ‘t), yes,’ she replied ; ‘a great many times.’ ‘How, then,’ I asked, ‘can you say that you are not a sinner V ‘lt is tooken away,’ she replied, ‘Who has taken it away,’ I inquired again. She replied, ‘I have trusted in Christ.’ This was from a very little girl, not five years old. Yet, in all the conversation I have had with grown people, I never heard a more intelligent, practical idea of faith in Christ. Living Fast.—This phrase is applied frequently to certain young men who are following a fasbionable'eourse of life, at tended with more or less dissipation ami extravagance. But with great propriety this term may be applied to all those who arc hurrying through life—overworking the brain, and giving but little rest to theii body or miuds. Carlyle very truly re marks that‘the race oflife has becomo in tense ; the runners are treading upon each other’s heels; woe bo to him who stops to tie his slioe-strngs.’ What a fearful amount of ‘wear and tear’ to the nervous system is there in every department of life! What a continual strife is there in every com munity for wealth—for distinction and pleasure ! llow much disappointment and envy may be found lankling in the. breast of many persons! Dr. Arnold of Rugby used to say, ‘lt is not work that injures a man ; it is vexation that does it.’ It is this ‘fast living’ in our country which pro duces so many of the ills that flesh is heir to—it undermines the constitution—breaks down the nervous system—produces pre mature old age and shortens life. Conversation.-Conversation resembles the flowing of a mighty river. At its com mencement, when it first trickles from its rocky sourco, its transparent waters bright en the little pebbles over which it flows, and its tiny ripples, as they dash along in their precipitous course, sparkle with each ray of light, and gladden the heart of the beholder with their brilliancy. Anon, the broad channel is contracted, and the stream let increasing in depth as it advances, and gathering strength and volume on the way, with difficulty presses through its narrow banks. The rapidity of the current is les send, the glowing ripplets are gone, but in their place are depth and vigor. No lon ger turning aside to play with shining stones, or dance wit h the sunbeams, pro foundly and quietly it passes on overcom ing all obstacles. Singing in Death.—The following touching incident is related in a daily pa per, in referring to the dreadful catastrophe at Lawrence, by which one hundred per sons were crushed to death by the falling of the Mill. A company of girls were safe, and com paratively uninjured, uutil tl>e fire broke ont. They would soou have been rescued if the devouring flames had not shut out every hope from the prison in which they were immnred,’ but wnen the fire began to roar around them, they, as if by inspira tion, joined in singing the hymn : •We’re going home to glory.’ Their voices rose clear.and musical above the crackling of the flames, but they soon were silenced, to be heard no more until they had passed the narrow sea that divided them from the heaven of their faith. nr “Is it not curiousf” said an old gen tleman, a few days since, to his friend, “a watch should be perfectly dry, when it has a running spring inside 1” When one sin is admitted, it is general ly found that it has a companion waiting at the door, and the former will wrk liawb for the ftdmitfiion of the latter AMscellaneous Advertisements. lIIeCORD, HORTON & WALTON, WHOLESALE DEAI.EKS IN Groceries Generally. KAUFFER. Angnsta February 5,1860-3 m. UNTtER THE ATTGUSTA HOTEL, AUGUSTA, r^A Patent Medicines, Ac. . Fever and Ague, from which mankind suffer over a large part of tlio globe, is ilio consequence of n diseased notion in the system, induced by the poisonous miasm of vegetable decay. This exhalation is evolved by the action of solar heat oit wet soil, and rises with the watery vapm from it. While the sun is below the horizon this va por lingers near the earth’s surface, and the virus is taken with it through the lungs into the blood. There it nets its an irritating poison on the internal viscera nnd excreting organs of the body. The liver becomes torpid nnd fails to secrete not only this virus, lint also the bile from the blood. Doth the vims and the bile accumulate in the circulation, and produce’ violent constitutional disorder. The spleen, the kid neys, nnd the stomach sympathize with the liver, nnd become disordered also. Dually, tiie instinct of our organism, as if in an attempt to expel the noxious infusion, concentrates the whole blood of the liotly in the internal excretortcs to force them to cast it out. The blood leaves the surface, and rushes to the cen tral organs with congestive violence. This is the Cim,L. lint in this effort it fails. Then the Fever follows, in which the blood leaves the central organs and rushes to the surface, as if in another effort to ex pel tiie irritating poison through the other great ex cretory —tiie skin. In this also it fails, and the sys tem abandons tiie attempt exhausted, waiting for the ‘ recovery of strength to repeat tiie hopeless effort another day. These arc the tits or paroxysms of Fe ver and Ague. Such constitutional disorder will of course undermine the health if it is not removed. We have labored to find, nnd have found, nn an. tidoto. Ayer’s Ague Cure, . which neutralizes this malarious poison in the blood,, and stimulates the liver to expel it from the hotly. As it should, so it docs cure this afflictive disorder with perfect certainty. And it does roorty or rather does what is of more service to those subject to this • infection. If taken in season it expels it from the sys tem as it is absorbed, “nnd thus keeps those who use it free from Its attacks; keeps the system in health: although exposed to the disease. Consequently ft not’ only cures, but protects from, the great variety of af fections which are induced by this malignant infirr - eticc, such as Remittent Fever, Chill Fever, Dumb, or Masked Ague, Periodical Headache, or Bilious Head ache, Bilious Fevers, Neuralgia, Rheumatism, (lout,. Blindness, Toothache, Earache, Catarrh, Asthma,. Palpitations, Painful Affections of tiie Spleen, Hys terics, Colic, Paralysis, and Painful Affections of the Stomach and Bowels, all of which, when arising from tiiis cause, will be found to assume more or less the intermittent type. This “Ague Cure” removes tlio cause of these derangements, and cures the disease. Tills it accomplishes by stimulating the excretories to expel the virus from the system; and these organs by degrees become habited to do this their office of their own accord. Hence arises what wo term accli mation. Time may accomplish tiie same end, but often life is not long enough, or is sacrificed in the attempt, while this “ Ague Cure” does it at once, and with safety. We have great reason to believe this is a surer as well as safer remedy for the whole class of diseases which are caused by the miasmatic infec tion, than any other which has been discovered; and it lms still another important advantage to the pub lic, which is, that it is cheap as well as good. PREPARED uy DR. J. C, AYER & CO. LOWELL, MASS. Price One Dollar per Bottle. Ayer’s Cherry Pectoral lias won for itself such a renown for the cure of every variety of Throat and Lung Complaint, that it is en tirely “unnecessary for us to recount the evidence of its virtues, wherever it lias been employed. As it lias long been in constant use throughout this sec tion, wc need not do more than assure tiie people its quality is kept up to the best it ever lias been, and that it may be relied on to do for their relief all it has ever been found to do.
