City and Country Life. 01 all tlie unneighborly glares, a, gn\at city is the most strangely inhuman. Yon may live months—years, even—with only an eight-inch wall separating you from people you never see, whose names you may leatn by accident, and who .arc hap pay aud sorrqyrful—who are born, married and buried— without you knowing it. You hear the piano-forte on the oilier’ sided the wall, or the cry of a child ; or joyous laughter. You see the physician’s chaise standing at the door, and infer that somebody is sick. Some day thcic comes a hearse aud several carriages, and you know that somebody is dead ; and that is all you know of what has happened with in six feet of you. But for the wall, you could have lain in your bed, and shaken hands with the 6ick person—ot laid it on a corpse! All round you arc hundreds of dwellings crowds of people. There are intelligent minds with whom you would delight to hold converse, and loving hearts with whose joys and sorrows you could sympa thise ; and yet, in the midst of ail these riches of life! you may Leas utterly and desolately alone, and severed from all hu man sympathy, aB our friend Robinson Crusoe. You may sit next to your nearest neigh bor at church, or at the theatre; but you are none the less strangers. In the coun try, if lie lived ten miles away, you would get aequianted ; in the city, only ten inch es separate your parlors, your dinning rooms, and your bed chambers, and it is an impassable barrier. Jt is quite possible that the man whose friendship you could trust, or the woman whose love might he the happiness of your life, cats, drinks and sleeps eh se by you—-just the other side of a bnck aud two inches of plaster, and yet you are fc forever lost to each other; because though hunger may go through stone walls, etiquette will not allow human sym pathy to pierce through brick ones. Few people starve for want of food, in a great city; but millions starve for want of sympathy, and kindness, and love. And, what is wonderful, nearer you bring men together, the more unneighboi ly they get. In the couutry, everybody knows everybody ; in a great city, there are a gient many who ’know nobody', and whom nobody knows. French Pride. In France, the social relations between class aud class, between employer and em ployed, between mistress and servant, are freer and moro friendly than these rela tions are in Fngland. In franco, even under Bor.apartist despotism, and despite the love of luxury which afflicts every grade of the community, the Revolution’s mark remains. Everywhere there is res pect for the able man, even when he lias sprung from the lowest social depth. The soldier who has fought his way from be hind the bar of a village inn to the rank of Marshal of France; the forlorn peasent boy who has turned a five-franc piece iuto n splendid fortune ; the humble girt great ly matched ; all find even in show-adorn ing .Paris, a welcome, hearty aud sincere, in the citclcs to which they :ise. In Paris poor boys who have become great men may be seen any day airing some bronzed Normandy daute, in the high cap of her native village, proud indeed of a mother or a sister. If ’ hero lo a section of the Paris public. 1n,.. “r, whore exceptions to this healthy’ btato of feeling may be found, tho inquirer must seek ’it iu the sombre street*? and behind tho ponderous gateways of the Quarticr Saint Germain. Here may be found shrivelled old people nursing, in boreditary ruins, the hereditary prejudices which belong to them. Here we find, in tho dilapidated section, the hopeless section of French society—some thing like the feeling which is prevalent in the genteel world of England, where anxious lives arc passed in steering clear of acquaintances engaged in business.— That aistanco so jealously guarded by’ gentility between class and class, which good Judge/l'alfourd deplored iu his last speech from the bench, docs not exist in France, save among the old nobility.— Among our neighbors, mastois and sen - ante meet in a frank, gracious way. Mis tress talk with their servants ; your gate keeper will broach the topic of the day -With you. This general friendliness shocks .tnany English visitois to Paris; yet its .effect upon the pooplo of France lias been most salatary. It has refined the hum bler classes, and it has broadened the view of the richer classes. It has given dignity to every .kind of labor; and the general respect for labor has imposed self-respect on the laborer. A vain and frivolous race lias'bccome a thrifty race and a sober race. You may see drunken rag-pickers any day’ in Paris, but you must make a very long day’s journey, iudeed, before you wiil come across a drunken artisan. —lbtbhn l r /itccrtily Magazine. Th* Education Most Needed. TLo idea too commonly prevails that a lucre knowledge of books is the beginning and end -of education. The sons and daughters! especially of the rich, grow up with this notion, in’ idleness, as it were, with little idea of the responsibilities that Aw*il them. Their natures revolt at the lueutiuu of “labor,” uot dreaming that the parents before them obtained the wealth they are so proud of by industry and ecoucmy.
