OUR BABE!
CAN rain wo grieve for the dear .babe,
/1 Whilst she is gone to rest,
j F When God doth call his children home
wl Thej’re all forever blessed.
Sweet on her mother’s breast did lean,
While God did let her live.
With her a little while to stay,
lint still she lives again.
Her mother’s love, it was so deep.
And in her arms did sleep,
Her blooming checks and sparkling eyes
Hath withered like the rose.
The grave has now become her bed,
Bat will not hold her long,
The Loro will raise her up again
And then she’ll live forever.
When she was lingering her last pains,
The (handers rolled across,
The lightnings flashed, the night was pass'd
In agony and grief.
On the Twenty-second night of May,
Her breath was forced to stop,
Ten thousand dangers die's passed thro’
Although her time was short.
Farewell doar babe! the mothersaid,
I’ll no more see you here ;
But in the land where Jesus is,
1 hope I’ll meet you there.
Farewell! farewell! I know I must
Depart from thoe awhile,
Although 1 hope we’ll meet again
With God to help me on.
Greenesboro', June, 1860.
Cleanliness. —Comparevthe dirtiness
of the water iu which you have washed
when it is cold without soap, cold with
soap, hot with soap. You will find the first
has hardly removad any dirt at all, the se
cond a little more, and tho third a great
deal more. But hold your hand over a cup
of hot water a minute or two, and then, by
merely rubbing with the finger, you will
bring off flakes of dirt or dirty skin. Af
ter a vapor bath you may peel your whole
self clean in this way. What I mean is,
that by simply washing or sponging with
water you do not really clean your skin.
Tako a rough towel, dip one cornerin very
hot water —if a little spirit be addod to it
it will be more effectual —and then rob as
if you were rubbing the towell into your
skin with your lingers. The black flakes
•which come off will convince you that you
wero not clean before, however much soap
and water you may have used. These
flakes are what require removing. And
you can leallrkeep yourself cleaner with
a tumbler fall of hot water and a ioug!i
towel and rubbing, than with a whole ap
paratus of bath and boap and sponge with
out rubbing.
It is quite nonscuso to say that anybody
need be dirty. Patients have been kept
clean by those moans on a long voyage,
when a basin full of water could not be af
forded and when they could not be moved
•out of their berths, as if all the appurten
ances of home had been at hand. Wash
ing, however, with a large, quantity of
water, has qdite othor effects than those
of mere cleanliness. The skin absorbs the
water and becomes softer and more perspi
rable. To wash with soap and soft water
is, therefore, desirable from other points of
viewgthan that of cleanliness. —Notes on
Nursing by Florence Nightingale.
What is a Lady l —What we should
call a rather exacting lady correspondent
of the Now Orleans Delta, thus answers
tho query:
A lady must posses perfect refinement
and intelligence. She must be gracious,
affable and hospitable, without the slight
est degree of fussiness. She must be a
Christian, mild, gentle and charitable, un
ostentatious and doing good by stealth.
She must bo deaf to scandal and gossip.
Her high sense of honor will forbid her
prying into her husband’s secrets, search
ing stealthily his portmonnaie and pock
ots, and breaking open his letters. 9be
must not disdain a kindly nod or recogni
tion to her servants, seamstress, dress
maker, butcher, baker, or any other em
ployer she may chance to meet. Sho must
possess discrimination, knowledge of hu
man nature, and tact sufficient to avoid
offending one's weak points, steering wide
of all subjects which may be disagreeable
or offensive to any one present. She tnnst
keep the golden rule uppermost in her
mind. She must look upon personal clean
liness and freshness of attire as next to
godliness. Her dress must be iu accord
ance with her means, never dressy or
flashy, but if possible, composed of the
best material. Abhoring everything like
soiled or faded finery or mock jewelry, her
pure mind and clear conscience will cause
the foot of time to pass as lightly over the
smooth brow as if she stepped on flowers;
And, as she moves with quiet grace and
dignity, all will accord her, instinctively,
the title of lady.
Men with the qualifications above enu
merated might with great propriety be
called “gentlemen.”
llow the Bite of a Dog Should he Treat
ed.—Dr. Stephen Ware, of Boston, in bis
testimony in a recent case which grew out
of injuries from the bite of a dog, furnish
ed the following valuable advice:
In the case of the bite of a dog where
the teeth of the animal penetialod the
llosh, whether the dog was known to be
mad or not, lie should use the same pre
cautions. He would wash the wound with
warm water, extract all the rims possible
by sucking tbe wound with his lips, and
then cauterize it deeply with the caustic
most roadily obtained, but should use pot
ash if it cwald be procured at once. The
time in which tho effects of the bite of a
rabid doe would be seen, varied from two
to throe days to as many years, but if no
effects were fell after two or three months,
as a general thing tbe patient might feel
luaastfsafo. Bites made through cloth
ing an seldom productive of much bartn,
as arm if the dog is mad, the clothing
absorbs the virus before the teeth reach
tbe Scab. Moat all of the fatal cases oc-

which neutralizes this malarious poison in tlie blood,
and stimulates the liver to expel it from the body.’
As it should, so it does cure this afflictive disordcV
with perfect certainty. And it docs more, or rather
does what is of more service to those subject to this
infection. If taken in season it expels it from the sys
tem as it is absorbed, and thus keeps those who uso

although exposed to the tlisc.-sc. Consequently it not
only cures, but protects from, the gTfat variety of af
fections which are induced by this maligr."'tt inf,a-’

Stomach and Bowels, all of which, when arising from

cause of these derangements, 0r..! cures tho disease.
This it accomplishes by sliaii.iating the cxcrctories s

nnd with safety. We have great reason to believe this
i; a surer as well as Vafer remedy for tlie Whole elate 5
of diseases which are caused by the miasmatic inffee

it lias still another important advantage to the jiniS
