tyx ews items from tlie Uaintiridge (G.) ’Advocate and Journal, of July 10: Jtr. Bennet S. Whidtloti inform* ns that on the 4th inst., while fishing ou Spring creek, some live miles above Yaiborough’s Ferry, he found a suit of clothes on the bank of the creek, supposed to be the clothes of John Williams. |fr. >L Rupp, a shoemaker of this place and a good citizen, was drowned at the Ferry on the evening of the sth. He, in cjnrpany with several others, was in hatha ing. and all his companions could swim, but be could not, and had swam across the rivet leaving him near the edge.— When they returned, ho was missing.— Immediate search was made fyr him. which proved unavailing up to the inorning of the 7th. when he was found, uear Wbi taker’s ferry, two miles from the place, where lie drowned. A friend informs us that a widow Indy, hy the name of Mrs. Griffin, residing soma two miles from town, is in a condition of absolute want. She has four or five dependent children, her largest, a little boy some ten years old. She lias, we understand, no way of making a support. We U-ai’ii that she is a straight-forward and deserving lady. Her husband having viuluted the laws of his country, had to leave for other pnits —hence, her condi tion. Those feeling it a duty to aid her, can do so personally, or if they will hand us their contributions we will sec that she gots them. Come, friends. Wonderful Escape. On Wednesday cvcuing last, a litte son, seven years old, of Dr. \Vm. 11. Philpot, .of Talbot county, w hile playing upon the ,curb of his fathet’s well, lost bis balance and fell to the bottom, a distance, of fifty live feet, about fivo feet water. His father .was, fotunately, not. more than eighty or one hundred yards off, and reached the ; spot in time to save him, but narrowly .escaped With his own life. Thu Doctor, <iu reaching the well, hastily unwound the .rope from the windlass, intending to slide .clown upon it; but he bad no sooner •thrown his weight upon the rope, than it became disengaged from the windlass, and die fell in too. Ho went to the bottom, of .course, and rose with his little son in his .arms, being barely able to get bis own ilmad out of the water. With remarkable jprescnce <ft mind be sang out “an right,” .and called for the bucket, (which lie had Moft above when, he uucoilud the rope.) The bucket was lowered and the little fellow lashed on and draw'll out, and the ifatlier, a few minutes afterwards, followed by the steps. They were both considera bly bruised and rubbed, but neither of ttheiu seriously injured ; and their friends •at a distance need entetain no uneasiness. There were no bones broken and the little hoy (who was woist hurt) was able •to walk in live or six hours. The Twnota as Food. —Dr. Dennett, a iprofjfssui of some celebrity, considers the itomato au invaluable article of diet, and ascribes to it various important medical properties. First: That the tomato is •one of the most powerful aperients of the. Jiver and other organs ; where calomel i s indicated, it is probably one of the most itfeclive and least harmful remedial agent* known to the profession. Second : That *a chemical extract will be obtained from it kifirtt will supersede the use of calomel in \ the cure of disease. Third: That he bus wuceessfull.y treated diarrhoea with this article alone. Fourth : That when used ;san article of diet it is an almost sov mroigu remedy for dyspepsia and indiges tion. Fifth : That it should be constantly meed for daily food, either cooked or rawi ■or .i the form of catsup; it is tfce most Iscullby rrticle uow in use. * jyW'o find the followin’ paragraphs in the Macon (Ctu.i Telegraph, of Julv FStli: The following named gentlemen hate been admitted to practice law in the .Su preme, court of this State, at the present session in this city: Joseph A. The Great. Eastern Coming to Philadel phia.—The Ledger says that negotiations are on foot now to* bring the Grent East ern round from New York to Philadelphia. One of Lor agents was in Philadelphia to learn precisely the capacity of tbo Dela ware to float such a monster, and received very satisfactory evidence that the ship canotne up to the city without any diffi culty on a flood tide. The Ledger adds: “Our pilots here will guarantee to bring her up to t ho city safely, where she can have from forty to fifty feet of water to ride.
