Our D?ad. Nothing in our own; wo hold oar pleasures Just a little while ere they are lied; One hr one earth robs us of our treasures ; X jtuing is our uvu, except >ur dead. They are ours, and hold in faithful keeping, Safe forever, all they took away; Cruel life ean never stir that sleeping. Cruel time can never scire that prey. Justicc pales; truth fades; stars fall from heaven; Human are the great whom we revere ; No true crown of honor can be given; Till the wreath lies on a funeral bier. How the children leave us; and no traces Linger of that smiling angel band; Gone, forever gone; -and in their places Weary men and anxious women stand. Yet we have some little ones, still ours ; They have kept the baby smile we know, Which we kissed one day, and hid with flowers, On their dead, white face, long ago. When our joy is lost—and life will take it— Then no memory of the past remains ; Save some strange, cruel sting, that makes it Bitterness beyond all present pains. Death, more tender-hearted, leaves to sorrow Still the radiant shadow—long regret; We shall find, in some far bright to-morrow, Joys that he has taken, living yet, Is love ours, and do we dream wo know it, Bound with all our heart-strings, all our own? Any cold and cruel dawn may show it. Shattered, desecrated, overthrown. Only the dead hearts forsake us never; Love, that to death’s loyal cure has fled. Is thus consecrated ours forever, And no change can rob us of our dead. S;, when fate comes to besiege our city, Dim our gold, or mako our flowers fall, Death, the angel, comes in pity, To save our treasures, claims them all. All the Year Round. Thunder, Wind and Rain. —Yesterday evening our city was visited by a very, heavy wind and rain, which lasted for sometime. Shade trees, fences and chim neys were blown down, and at one time it was thought that some of the buildings were canied away. We have not he,aril what effect the storm had upon the crops, hut suppose much damage was done them. The rain was greatly needed tu this sec tion, everything pertaining to the veget able kingdom being almost destroyed.— ‘flic atmosphere has undergone quite a change, and it is very probable that we will be blessed with a short season of de lightful weather.— Selma R'pur ter, 12 th iitel. Fatal Affrays at the South. —A few days ago, at the White Sulphur Springs,, ru Florida, Col. Richard luge Wynne, a lawyer, attempted to chastise Dr. (Juries with’his cane, when the latter jerked his cane away, struck W ytme a blow with the head, which broke it, and then run the sword into his body. It the street, at Charleston, S. C., lari Tuesday, two respectable citizens, Robert C. Browne and Waireu Andrews, ex changed several shots, wounding one another in the arms and legs, but not se riously, though a poor negro man attrac ted to the spot, was shot through the heart and instantly killed by* ouo of the pistol balls. “Pa, aint I growing tall 1” “Why, what’s your height, sonny?” “soven feet, lacking a yard.” Pa fainted.
