H*w tke Mmcj Cmm. Queer John was sang how money goes. Bat how It comes, who knows! Wto knows l Why, every Yankee mother’s son Can tell yon how “the thing” is done. It comes by honest toil and trade; By wielding Bledge and driving spade, And building ships, balloons and drums. And that*S|the way the money comes. How does it come 1 Why, as it goes, By spinning, weaving, knitting hose, By stitching shirts and coats for Jews. Erecting churches, renting pews, And manufacturing boots and shoes ; for thumps, and twists, and cuts, and hues. And heads and hearts, tongues lungs, and thumbs; And that's the way the money comes. How does it come 1 The way is plain— By raising cotton, corn, and cane ; By wind and steam, lightning and rain; By guiding ships across the main; By building bridges, roads, and dams, And sweeping streets, and digging clams, With whistles, hi’s! and ho’s! and hum’s! And that's the way the money comes. The money comes—how did I say ? Not always in an honest way ; It comes by tricks as well as toil. x But bow is. that i why, slick as oil, By putting peas in coffee bags ; By swapping watches, knives, and nngs, ‘And peddling wooden clocks and plums, And that’s the money comes. How does it come ?—wait, let me see. It very seldom comes to me; It comes by rule, [ guess, and scale. gometiraes, by riding.on a rail ; But oftener that’s the way it goes, From willy bells and fast young beaux; It comes in big, nay, little sums, Aye, that's the way the money comes. —— ■ Marriage Customs in New England. — It was recently stated before the Massa chusetts Historical Society, that no record exists of any marriage performed by a clergyman in New England prior to 1686. except in George’s Province, by a man of the Church of England The state ment caused much surprise and elicited considerable discussion. It was accounted for by the fact that marriage was consid ered by the Puritans to be a civil contract, and not a religious rite. In abjuriug the foiras and ceremonies of the Established Church as off-shoots of Popery, the mar riage sacrament was also abandoned. Winthrop’s History of New England con tams the following: “1617, 4thday, 6th month. There was a marriage to be sol emnised at Boston. The bridegroom be ing of Hingham, Mr. Hubbard’s church, lie was procured to preach, and came to Bostonito that end. But the magistrates, Bearing of it, sent to him to forbear. The •eaaons were: 1. For that his spirit had been-discovered to be averse to our eccle siastical.and-civil government; and he was a bold man and would speak his mind. 2. We were not willing to bring in the ‘English .oustorn of ministers performing the solemnities of marriage, which ser mons wave present, and would bestow a word off .exhortation, &c. it was permitted. lieu. JL. T. Mann — lt was our good pleasure to hear this learned and truly eloquent divine preach a most elegant ser mon, at the M. E. Church in our city, on Sabbath last. That zeal and devout earnestness with which ho presses his hearers of the importance of the everlas ting truths of that book of books, cannot fall to the ground without leaving a last ing impression on bis congregation. We hqpe die may visit our city again. Marietta Statesman, July 27. Marriage by Notaries Invalid — Judge Xeonard, of the New York Supremo Court, decided on Saturday that a marriage cere mony performed by a Notary Public was invalid. The practice of celebrating these nuptials, it is stated, prevails to a consid erable extent among the German popula tion. Escape of Convicts. —Upward of fifty convicts escaped from the Penitentiary at Jefferson City, Missouri, last week, by bursting open the prison gate. Three convicts were killed and beven seriously wound 3d. All the prisoners were recap tured excepting seven. Cheap Boots. —The Philadelphia Led ger, in announcing “the end of the leather speculation,” congratulates those who haye been compelled for the last four or five years to pay pearly for the boots and shoes they had to wear, upon the event —andaajs there will now be a material reduction in the price of a bide, as well as in the east of a pair of boots, oi a pair of shoes. ’ TOR SALE. ~ ■7 CT Barrels of Hectifie-J Whisky ; f tIW Usrrels, Old Rve Mstwngahrls ; * “X Whisky; *> „ “ XX an •• xxx “ 90 Bssksts Pearl Champaign*; IS “ Mumm.e “ ISO Boxea Tobacco, of different brands; by ALSO. 230 Barrels Rectified Whisker -, AS “ White Whiskey. .Augusta.
