btor, the widow ofthe gallant Commodore
wlio lost his life in adnel with Commodore
Barron, died the very same day that Mr.
Oates closed his earthly career. An ardent
friendship existed between the Commodore
and Mr. Gales, and after her bereavement
Mrs. Decatur found iu Mr. Gales a warm
friend.

bama. By an act of the last session of the
Legislature of Alabama, the military fea

system of education, and these appoint
ments have been made in conformity
thereto.
A Catlioltc Church for the Colored Pop
ulation.—The number of Catholics among
onr colored population having increased to
such an extent, it lias been determined to
furnish them with a separate and distinct
church. To this end the old Catholic
Church on Holt street will be prepared,
and a gentleman who was born and raised
in the city, hut who has visited Rome and
taken oiders, will have charge ofthe

Accidents. — We regret to learn that Alaj.
M. N. HoUtei was thrown from his horse
at Richardson's on Saturday last, and con
siderably injured; also, that Mr. Jacob
Wright, i/i returning from the. parade, was
run into by. someone (name not given) on
horseback, was thrown from liis buggy,
