tn Wednesday, a wretched negro was tried for,

frightful visage, with a chain locked about his neck,
and hear the awful sentence of death pronounced on
him hv twelve honest men.

pg-[t is said that a writing-master at New York
has recently written, on one sheet of paper, the whole
of the Old Testament(excepting the Chronicles, which
arc but repetitions of Samuels and K'ngs) into one
fancy-piece, which is framed as a picture, covered
with a large plate-glass. It is apparently a fine draw
ing of the front of a temple, but the lines, instead of
being single marks, are lines of writing, so fine as to
need an eye-glass to read them, yet formed with the
most exquisite skill. The piece contains 27,594 lines,
and looks like an engraving. It cost the writer the
labor of thirty-one months.

my notice here, and in fact, throughout France ; and
that is, to witness the strong remains of bitter feel
ing which still exist in the breast of many French
men against England. You a-k any old man here,
who can recollect the beginning of this century —you
ask him whether he entertains a happy feeling for
England, and lie will say invariably, ‘Can 1 forget
Waterloo?’ That rankles in the breast of a French
man, and they will never forget or forgive it. Many
have gone so far as to say that now is the best time
to revenge themselves on their ancient enemy, when
she is crippled by the loss of her finest troops, and
her shores lie unprotected from the ravages of a pow -
erful enemy. Sixty thousand men could land in a
few hours on the Southern const of England, and
what would prevent a march on London?”
