The redot t created great excitement

large crowd of probably 160 men ashem-
Wi»’d around the depot. Jr‘ a* it was
•’•nounred to the crowd that the train
•as pulling out from Vest Point, a
•nesxgti came from Newnan that Holt
Wad already been burned at the stake.
The crowd them dispersed from the
depot, but nil day they hung around
<n squads dirciKsing the affair and
•agertj catching every scrap of news
4n regard to it.
We quote part of the acconnt given
Wy the Constitution Monday morning:
Newnan, Ga., April 23. —(Sjiecial)—
Msrn Holt, the negro murderer of Al
fred Cranford and the assailant of Oran*
lord’s wife, was burned at the stake
«B e mils and a quarter from this place
kins afternoon at 2:30 o’clock.
Fully 2,000 people surrounded the
•mnll sapling to which he was fastened
•nd watched the Hames eat away his
fesh ; saw his laxly mutilated by knives
•nd witnessed the contortions of his
tody ia his extreme agony.
Such suffering has seldom lieen wit
•esstd, and through it all the negro
Uttered hardly a. cry. During the con
tortions of his body, several blood ves
sels bursttxl.
Self-confessed and almost defiant,
Without a plea for mercy and no ex
pectation of it, Holt went to the stake
<ilh as much courage as any one could
possibly have on such an occasion, and
toe only murmur that Issued from his
lips was when angry knives plunged
Into his flesh, and his life’s blood siz
•led in the fire before his eyes.
Then he cried, “Oh, my God I Oh,
Jesus I”
Thecrowd that burned 11«» lt —it could
Berdly be called n mob, so orderly was
Its action—has made no mistake. The
Brin was identified by a dozen people,
lie admitted his guilt and told of the
murder. He confessed that he had
murdered Cranford and said the deed
was done with the expectation of ob
tain ing »u reward of S2O from L<ge
to-’nk'and
He confessed while being brought
Itere, confessed when confronted by
Al r*. McElroy, the heartbroken mother
of Mrs. Cranford, and confessed when
be was taken from the lira and asked
to tell the truth about tne crime. He
told the details, always implicating
t»ige S’.riekland.
When the train arrrived here from
Criflin it was literally packed with
people. Every place where a man eonld
possibly crowd in they was one and
• hen the train stopjied at the depot
they jxtured from it in great nurnlters.
Down the road the crowd marched
•nd at this time it was thought the
r.egrq would be carried on to Palmetto
•nd there be executed. Word came
Chat the Governor had ordered out
Creeps and then it wa» detinnined that
Vie negro should be killed at once and
•utLe carried to Palmetto.
First be was made to remove his
Clothing, and when the flames began
•t< ent in his b>xly it was almost . nude.
Before the tire was lightest his lef:
far was severed from his b >dy. Then
right ear was cut away. During
Cltis proceeding he uttered not a sound.
Other portions of his laxly were mu
tilated by the knives of those who gath
ered about him. but he wax not wound
ed tv such an extent that he was not
Lilly conscious and could feel the ex-
Crutiating pain.
When he fell from the stake he was
kicked back and the flames renewed.
Then it was was that the flames con
sumed his body and in a few minutes
only a few bones and a small part of
the'body was all that was left of Sam
Holt.
THE GREAT PBEPARATIIJNS
For Memorial Day Next
Wednesday Are Now
Complete.
imnor wu be fresekt.
The Program Promises to Be One
of the Moat Interesting Ever
Listened to by a Troup
County Audience,
Memorial Day will be appropriately
observed on next Wednesday. The
ladies who have charge of the arraage
ments have left nothing undone to
make the occasion worthy of the great
yet sad cause it commemorates; and in
the* hands of these enthusiastic and
faithful workers the day cannot be
otherwise than an impressive one.
The preliminary exercises will Ist
held at vh«* chapel of the Southern Fe
male College at 2:30 o’clock in the af
ternoon. The aedress will be made by
Mr. James Beall Ridley. The music
will be under the direction of Miss
Ruth Evans, and her sweet voice, to
gether with that of her gifted sister,
Mrs. J. L. Bradfield, with other talent
ed vocalists and musicians, will add
greatly to the pleasure of the day.
Lil tie Miss Carrie Nix will delight the
audience by reciting a touching poem
relating to the “Lost Cause.”
Both the military companies will be
in atiendance as escort to the Veterans
and ladies of the Memorial Association..
The schools are invited to participate,
and nil the citizens are cordially urged
to be present and take part in the ob
servance of the day.
Seats will be reserved upon the stage
for all Confederate Veterans; and it
is earnestly desired that they will oc
cupy them.
The Daughters of the Confederacy
nre requested by the President to wear
their badges—and not to fail in this.
Owing the scarcity of flowers, it has
been suggested that wreaths and other
suitable emblems should be wrought
in cedars and evergreens and used for
decorations.
After the exercises at the college, the
procession will be formed and go to
Stonewall Cemetery for the purpose of
decurating the graves.
The exercises will be concluded there
and salutes fired in honor of the illus
trious dead.
The line of march is as follows. —
LaGrange Light Gau rd a.
Confederate Veterans.
School Children.

Carriages of ladies of the Memor
ial Association.
