“ Dear father, pray tall tu the story.
You have tnfd as -o often before :
Os those dear angel# of merry,
The women of Baltimore,
Baa inny ia hero beside me.
And hare, too, ia Willie and May;
Oh. tall Be again of their goodness.
Whew ia the dark pnaoo you lay.”
“The fight had been long ard (earful.
And juat aa it Beared iu cioaa.
Cat elf from my men. and wounded,
I fall ia the bands «f my foe*.
They seat oa away to a fm treae.
Which stood out atone ia iufleom ;
I felt aa I entered the portal.
As iho’ 'twere the gate ol the tomb.
• No word oould I hear from your mother,
No word from my children dear;
But lonely aod gloomy 1 Based out,
Ob the swift rolling Delaware.
Our ratiobs ware poet and ware scanty.
Our clothes ware thread bare aod Inin ;
And fiercely aod creel and biting.
The Winter was juat selling in.
Our hearte war* sinking within us;
Already I gee a yen to God,
And felt that the Springsrtn reluming.
Would shad its warm beam# an my aod.
Then earn* there the sweat words of friendship,
There came clothing and food in great *wrc ;
Oh I It came Ilka the charm of tka sunlight.
From the women of Baltimore.
“ Oh, how many ayar ware then brightened,
flow many wsn checks did glow ;
And stern men. u ne<»nq<icr«d by eutfering.
Now wept aa they 7 hewed the heart low.
We buried full many a conn adc
Away from that prison island drear.
Where no sister, no wife and no mother,
Ob his lone gra. e will drop the sod tear.
Rut many a death lied was softened.
By the dear ones I *|«ili« of In-fore;
The angels in guise of tin- 11101101#,
The women «*f Baltimore.
Many prayers from the lips of the dying.
Went floating on high from his cell.
For those who had heard the Christ a bidding.
And labored so nobly and well.
“In the day when our Father shall call us.
To give for his treasures of love.
To those who unceasingly labored.
To lay up their jewels above.
To those who beard the poor prisoner.
As be moaned in hi* msnacles sore ;
A crown shall ba given of the brightest,
To tbe women of Baltimore.”
