< trE ßioß Court.— A special term of
Court for Spalding ('oiuity, will corn
ice its session, on Monday next, at the
Court House in this city, as will be seen
f-sm an official notice to that effect, to be
found in another column.
lup- The Address of the llev. W. I’.
Harrison, delivered before the Griffin Fe
male College, on the 4th of July, and which
has created a considerable sensation in this
community, can be had at this (fffiee, or at
the Book Storj of 11. T. lJrawner & Co.—
Price 2o cents.
Literary Society.—Col. L. T. Doyal
and !’• M. Browp Esq., will each read an
Essay before the Society at its meeting, to
be held in the basemeut of the Baptist
Church to-night, at half past 8 o’clock.—
The meeting will be public, and a full atten
dance is solicited. Ex. Committee.
Religious Notice.—The protracted
meeting continues in the Methodist Church
in this city, with increasing interest. Her.
Rishop Fierce, I). F , will be in attendance
the latter part of the week, and will preach
on Saturday and Sunday —services com
mencing at 10-i o’clock in the morning, and
8 o’clock in the evening.
To Parents and Guardians.—This
class of our citizens will do well to recollect
that Mrs. Bethune opens her school again,
on next Monday, for the reception of pupils.
This accomplished lady, who did her whole
duty —yea, more than her share—during the
war, and who is amply competent to per
form what she proposes, deserves encourage
meat at the hands of an appreciative com
munity. Sec her Advertisement headed
School Notiee.”
Tns Signet and Journal.—The first
(August) number of anew Masonic journal,
to be issued from the publishing house of J.
W. Burke & Cos., Macon, Ga., has reached
our table. It is very handsomely gotten up,
comparing favorably with the best speci
mens of typography wc have seen from the
Southern, and, —might we not almost say.?
—nl the Northern press. A Mamriic fri< n 1
at our elbow, who has run over on ril < f
the articles, speaks highly of it as an ex
ponent of Masonry and Mas-mio literature,
and on his judgement, every way to be re.
tied upon in such matters, we cmir.miul the !
magazine to the *• brethren of the my.-tic
rye.” Besides Masonry—its jiriiiiii.i iut.r

eral literature. It is edited by J. Emmett

The Soldiers’ Cemetery —On Thurs
day morning last, a portion of the Ladie-',
and a smaller portion of the Gentlemen of
the city of Griffin, met at the Soldiers’ Cem
etery, lor the purpose of cleaning off and re
decorating the soldiers’ graves. The turn
out was not very large, hut most of those, who
were present, laid hold in good earnest upon
the work before them, until the greater por
tion of the graves were put in good order ;
we regret to say, however, that some were
not cleaned off'. ['The ladies of the l'.xecu
tive Committee were upon the ground- ac
tively engaged in carrying forward the work,
and assigning the care of a certain number
of graves to such persons as were willing to
accept the charge. This assignment is to
be permanent, and the parties are be to held
responsible for the care of the graves assign
ed them. Some of the graves arc still in a
neglected condition, but it is to be hoped,
that the Executive Committee will soon find
a sufficient number of reliable persons ready
and willing to accept the sacred trust of re
ceiving into their charge such as have cot
teen taken.
The Officers and Executive Com
mittee of the ‘ Confederate Soldiers’ Mem
orial Society of Griffin ” are urgently solicit
ed to attend a meeting this (Thursday) after,
noon, at 5 o'clock r. m , at the Methodist
Church.
Short.—Some newspapers fill the whole
editorial page with one or two ponderous and
thundering articles. This kind of writing
is called the “ leader.” It takes up a heavy
topic and chews it to. the bitter end—nay,
punishes it to all eternity. It utterly ex
hausts a subject, and the only reason it does
not exhaust a reader is that it has no reader.
Mho does ever read those two-column edit
orials of high-shouldered rhetoric and stu
penduous argumentation ?
. N°, no > at style of newspaper editing
is killing off the journals which indulge it.
Short, sharp hits at a subject, done up in
from one to 1 alf dozen or so little pithy par
agraphs— hits that strike the nail and drive
it home straight and quick—are the popular
ideas of American journalism now.
People who sip the newspapers between
tups ot their morning coffee have not time to
read twice round the world to tell what the
editor is driving at. Long life to short ed
itorials, say we. —Xenia Torchliyht.
Robert Oulu and all the RedLls
Endorse the Copper-Bottomed Con
tention.— General Quid, late rebel Com
missioner ot exchange, says the people of
the South will send none but those who took
fart in the rebellion to the Philadelphia
Convention, for the reason that there are
none others in the South who have one
ounce of brains. The South, he says, will
soon resume control of the country as before
the war f.’.-r- h, *

THE MAN WHO FAILS TO BUY WHERE THE BEST BARGAINS CAN BE

Especial attention is called lo the Flock of LACK POINTS, and LACK
GOODS generally. In EMBROIDERIES they cannot bo surpasaed. The endless va
riety of FANCY’ G< )ODS and YANKEE NOTIONS, forbids even a partial enumeration.
In their department devoted to
GENTLEMENS’ WEAR,
They take especial pride believing as they do, that they offer a stock far superior, in
point of STYLE, QUALITY and QUANTITY toany ever before optned in Griffin. In
BOOTS AND SHOES.
For the Million, wc simply throw ourselves in the front, as second to none, either in
Price, Quality, Style, or any othei particular. The Ladies especially arc solicited to CS*
amino our stock of SHOES, as wc claim to have superiorly in that lino.
Connected as wo are with the largest houses in this section—with a New York whole
sale house to represent our interest in purchases—buying as wc do for cash, and
Intending to Become Permanent
In Griffin, wc think that the trading public will readily see that wc have not only the
ABILITY but the DISPOSITION and INTENTION to sell goods upon such terms »
