jiak. A special term of the Superior Court
is now in session at this place, the main
business of the Court being to clear the
docket and jail of the freedmen with which
they are respectively encumbered.
Abe Kendall and West Reid, were
brought to trial on yesterday for burning
the woodshop of Mr. Leach, were found
guilty, and sentenced to five years' imprison
ment and hard labor in the Penitentiary.-
A number ot other freedmen are in jail
awaiting trial upon various charges We
trust His Honor, Judge Speer, will be able
to make a general jail delivery before he ad

Another Ftiti:. —On last Saturday night,
an unoccupied family residence, on Poplar
street, in this city, belonging to Mr. Boyd,
of Merriwethcr county, was totally destroyed
by fire. Ipto a recent period it had been
tenanted by Capt. Laws’s family—there
being, at the time of the burning, no one on
the premises, except a negro woman who oc
cupied the kitchen. It was evidently the
work of ail incendiary. - Loss supposed to
be Sd.'fiOO ; insurance 81.700.
The members of the Fire Companies were
present, and, with the citizens, used their
best efforts to stay the spread of the fire—
not getting their engine to the spot, or, if
they did, not using it. wicked authors
of these i ’Cendiary acts could easily be found
out, wt re an enslave'l people only allowed to
institute the pr prr means of investigation.
So long as bureaus and blue coats are the

be r ifji.art nfu nig iovv down darkies and
f'w-d.,wo wl'ite people. Investigation 'is
Toris aeed or hiunrid, and hence crime

A Ridiculous Failure
So far, every effort to make ,l treason odi
oui” has ridiculously failed, for the simple
reason that the war was a civil war, and not
a treasonable struggle on the part of the
Southern pcnp'e. Civil war is what the
world regairbd it, what it really was, and is
all the Radicals huie oiade, or can make oi it.
This they know as well as we and the rest ot
the world do, and they may gnash their
tetth in vain now and forever, but they will
never prove that a contest is treason which
nearly overthrew them ; which required
them, first and last, to call out several mil
lions of men ; which extorted from the world
the acknowledgement of our belligerent
rights, and which covered our name with
glory though overwhelmed with defeat.
If treason has been committed, why is not
Jefferson Davis tried, in order that t..e issue
may be determined past cavil ? Ah, that is
what they shrink from. They well know
what condemnation awaits them in that trial,
and what vindication will be ours in that
verdict. They dodge the ordeal, for they
know that they would really be as much
tried, and much nearer condemned by the
trial than Jefferson Davis and the South.
When lienediet Arnold went to Europe,
at the close of the revolution, he found him
self hissed, scorned, and spit upon by the
sentiment of both English and continental
society wherever he presented himself, lie
died a miserable recluse, who dared not
show his face in public for lear of being in
sulted. That is the way the world treats
baiters. l>ut we do not find that Confed
erates are treated in this manner either at
home or abroad. Foreign nations extend
to them every honor and distinction ; even
exalting them to high places. Were Mr.
Davis or Gen. Lee in Europe to day,
admiration would follow and huzzas would
greet them wherever they appeared. No
single thought of‘treason ' would enter the
minds of the millions who would shout then
fame. The greatness of their deeds, the
purity of their virtues, and in the case of
Mr. Davis, the magnitude of his sufferings
and his martyrdom at Fortress Monroe,
would fill the minds of all men and capti
vate their hearts
The ,l odintn of treason,” as far as this
term is sought to he made applicable to
Southern people, is at once so preposterous
and absu.d, that it is high time the idle
folly of such language had ceased ; it stul
tifies the people who still continue to employ
it- It is considered mean and dishonorable
among getlemen to make a charge which
cannot be established. If ours was not a
civil war, or attempted revolution, let those
who dispute our proposition, prove the “ trea
son. ’ We all know how gladly they would
do so, if possible. Hut they cannot, and
therefore they refrain from trying Mr. Davis,
because they fear what is behind that ver
