I%it grralb. Urifin. Georgia, Sept. 12, 1866. Advkrtisers. —All advertisement*, to ensure publication in the next issue, should he banded in by 6 o’clock. To or* City Subscribers —Desiring to have our carriers attend to their duties with promptness and regularity, we would take it ES a favor if those who fail to have their papers left, would notify us at once. Railroad Article.— We desire our readers who ere gathering up all the items and suggestions they can, in regard to the railroads, and our proposed railroad in par ticular, to give the article over the signa ture of “Extensor,” a very thorough and Critical perusal. Meteoklogical.—lt was cloudy pretty much all day yesterday the weather culmi nating, about the middle of the afternoon, in hard rain, accompanied with wind, light ing, and thunder. Now, that the autum nal equinox is near at hand, it may well be apprehended that we shall have no small quantity of falling weather in the next twen ty days. Cholera in Atlanta. —The Atlanta papers of yesterday morning give the übpl'cas =ant announcement that cholera was actually in their city—that six cases occurred up to the time of tlleir going to Jtrcss—but only one had proved fatal. The city author ities have adopted all the approved methods to prevent its spread, and we doubt not, they will, to a great xtent, succeed. The vex ations difficulty, hov ver, they may have in tarrying out any ngtv dip , system of police Or bygich'e, Will be the inexorable atid un managable freedmen, who may still insist upon having the white folks to remember that he is tree, and by the help of the Bu reau will do just as he pleases. The Griffin authorities we trust, appreciate their respon sibilities under the circumstances. Mr. Baird, owing to the unfavorable weather last evening, did not lecture as was advertised. Noshing untoward oceuring, he Will lecture to night. Be sure to read the very interesting com n)un:cationj oh the ever interesting subject of rail roads, addressed Iff the editors, and signed ‘ Griffin.” The writer is anew con tributor to the Hcruht but evidently no new hand with the pen. Medical International Congress A communication, or circular it may be called, appears in the September number ol the Afifcta Medical and i'urgical Journal; I addressed to the editors thereof, and through them, doubtless, to the profession generally, stating that a medical congress, to he com posed of physicians fVotn ad quarters* is to meet in Paris, April n< it, at the time of the World’s Pair. Huge Tunnel.— The tunnel at the sum mit of the Pacific Bailroad on the Sierra Nevada mountains in California, will he sev enteen hundred feet in length, by twenty four feet in width and twenty-seven in height, and will be completed in about four teen months. From thence on the east side of the mountains the road will have a grade of ninety feet to the mile for about thirty five miles; thence for fifty miles from forty to twenty feet per mile on the desert. There is an editor in North Carolina with seven bullets in his body—received in duels and street encounters. llis paper ought to be called the “ Bullet-in,” and contain all ' leaded” matter. An Irish paper announces that a Air. Kenny, returning from town, fell down and broke his neck, bat happily received no fur ther damage. Shoulder-Straps in Request.—For the fifty four captaincies to be fi led in the regular army there are ten themsand two hundred applications on file in the War department. Mr. J. M Haralson was shot and instant ly killed in Social Circle on the night of the fith. While sitting at the desk in his store some unknown person came to the door and shot him, running off immediately after com mitting the deed, Tii.vt’s the Question. —The St. Ixrais Times says with great pith: “John A< Logan wants to fight the Southern people with a sword in one hand and a torch in the other. Fie ' John. What hand would you do your stealing with : ” Fsict* vs. Theories. “Give me a place to* rest ifty lever on, 1 ' swys Archimedes, “and I wi’M move the world." “Give me pure and unadulterated drugs," says medicus 1 es the olden time, "and I will cure disease." In one sense, both of these' learned prwidits were the veriest charlatans. They knew there was no place to rest their lever on, either to move the world or euro disease. Mechanism Was m a backward state, and the medical profession was but another name for aoreery, and ail the adjuncts of magic Alters and charms of the “evil ‘ye," 4c. But these latter Jays have borne unto us some thing more than even supeigtrtion and its crew ever dreamt of in their maddest philosophy. In these days of practical science, what was theory es yesterday is fact to day, and aril the old time notions become as bubbles in the sun, araf burst and break with every breath we draw. bet Archimedes shoulder his lever and we wifi find a resting plaee for it to move the world I.ct mine ancient medicus nant and toil no mure fur the drugs he so sorely needs, for we have them at our hand, ever ready to serve them at his beck. Refined in the laboratory of I)r. Maggie), the finest materials known ill the medical profession are obtainable by any one. Ilis bilious, Dyspep 'ie, And Diarrhea Tills stand unrivalled, and his Salve operates with magical effect upon burns, fealds, and all sores and ulcers of the skin. In fact, we think Maggiel's Tills and Salve arc ihe wonder of this centuiy, and we are happy in the thought that many others of our brethren of the craft agree with us. We would oarnes.ly eonnsel that all families provide themselves with Dr. maggiel’s Trcpi rations at *>nce, and keep them ready at hand, so as to use them at the most opportune time aid -u- occasion serves.—Valley beniiueL .. jlq ly THE GREATEST INDUCEMENT OF THE SEASON AT MRS.
