Mailer Clarifying in Having rtu lUitiafrd iiomliera Women. Beast ] Sutler, is a recent speech in Massa chusetts —appropriate to the man and the place —gave hi; opinion that the high spirit pf the Southern people could he brokcD, if proper measures were used by the proper persons to that end. And, to show the truth pf his statement, he reluted the following as a part of his personal experience, lie said . “ I aur going to speck of a nutter which ja a trait in the society of the .South, and also why they are easily governed. We hear it said every day that they are spirited people and ought to ho concilia ted; but this struck me as a distinguL-hing trait —that having lor about twenty years of my life been in the practice of criminal law, J have seen husbands pleading for their wives, fathers for their children, and chil dren for parents, but I never saw mortal kneel to mortal. Yet, when I was in New Orleans, it was an every day occurrence that women, splcnidly dressed in silks and satins, would come into my office and ask for favors on their bended knees. The cause I sup pose, was that having always been accustom ed to exact obedience, and to have favors asked upon the knees, when their positions became changed and new masters appeared, they assumed the position as they had once taught as proper. And therefore I say, talk not to me that those people can not be subdued.” The Baltimore Ga~<ttc, in noticing the above, eloquently remarks: “lie has not doubt looked upon more than one woman kneeling at his feet. And to any man whose heart, was human, what a story would that picture have told 1 What more could have been needed to enable him to fathom the depth of the humiliation in which the sup pliant had brought herself to plunge, to gauge the intensity of the agony and fear that maddened her, and to measure the boundless tenderness and love of the hearts that could submit to sue so humbly for the sake of others 1 What could have been added to the scene that would have told him more plainly that he must be a brute and a tyiaut who could bring woman to a pa*s like that! How could they have said more frankly that they knew his vni i and savage nature could only be mollified by their abasement, and that for the sake of those they loved they had consented to the painful sacrifice 1 No man who did not disgrace the name and uniform of a so'diev would have been apt to w.tness such a sp.ctacle more than once. Any man who was not a living di.-dionnr even to the in it her that bore him, wou'd have been touched with pity. But this man glo ries in the thought that lie has brought wo men to their knees, lie gloated over the sight at the time, and he revels in the recol lection of it now.’’ Nr.KOrjK-II AMM Kit lTlK.Vi'lllNti.—The | most popular ol English preucheis is the celebrated l)r. Spurtreon—celebratud bitcause I of the homely and forcible way lie has of ap j proachin" the understanding of his con gregation. The following passage Occam! in one of his recent discourses ; A certain tyrant font for one of his sub jects, and said to him : “ What is your em ployment He said: “I am a black smith.” “Go home and make me a chain of such a length ” lie went home; it occu pied him several months, and he had no wages till the time he was making it. Then he brought it to the monarch, and lie said : “Go make it twice as long.” lie brought it up again, and the monarch said : “Go make it longer still.” Each time he brought it, there was nothing but the command to make it longer still. An 1 when he brought it up at last, the monarch said : “ Take it, and bind him hand and foot with it, and cast him into a furnace of fire.” These are the wages for making the chain. Here is a medita tion for you to-night, ye servants of the ; devil. Your master, the devil, is telling 1 you to make a chain. .Some have been fifty years welding the links of the chain ; and he ' says: “Go make it still longer.” Next Sab- : bath morning, you will open that shop of I ■yours, and put another link ; next Sabb a th, you will be drunk and put another IRA ; •fiext Monday you will do a dishonest action ; and so you will keep on making frt:-h links j to this chain; and when you have lived | twenty years more, the devil will say : “ More licks on still.” And then, at last, it will be: \ “ Take him, and bind him hand and foot, and 1 cast him into a furnace of fire.” “ For the j wages of sin is death.” There is a subject j firt jour meditation. I do not think it’will; be sweet; but if God makes it profitable, it 1 will do you good. You must have strong rfcdicinc sometimes, when the disease is bad. 1 God apply it to your hearts.
