Baldwin made the fiist locomotive ever iyn in this country, and his engines are to f ound on perhaps every railroad in the umted States—certainly on every road in the Smith. They ought to whistle simulta neously a grand requiem over his death, tor he was ooe of those useful men who do more to advance the material interests of the couutry than a whole Congress or Legis mature of noisy demagogues. In the year 1820 a barn in Norfolk couty, ' a-, was burned by an incendiary. A young negro was at rested and tried for the crime, and sentenced to the penitentiary at Rich niond. VOL 1, : The Wife, —Only let a woman be suro that abe it precious to her husband—not i useful, not valuable, not convenient, simply, : but lovely and beloved ; let her be the rc ! cipieut of bis polite, hearty attentions; let I her feel that her care and love are noticed, \ appreciated, and returned ; let hor opinion oe asked, her approval sought, and her judgment respected in matters of which 6he lis cognizant; in short, let her only be lov ed, honorej, and cherished, in fulfilment of the marriage tow, and she will be to her husband, her children, itnd sooietv, a well spring of pleasure. She will bear pain, and toil, and anxiety, for her husband’s love is, to her, a tower and fortress. Shielded and sheltered therein, adversity will have lost its sting. She may sutler, but sytnpalbv will dull the edge of sorrow. A house with love in it—and by love we mean love expressed in words, and’ looks, and deeds, for we have not one spark of taith in love that never crops out—is to a bouse without love like a person is to machioe ; one is life, the other is mechanism. The un loved woman may have bread just as light, a house just as tidy as the other; but the latter has a spring of beauty about her, a joyousness, an aggressive and penetrating and pervading brightness to which the for mer is a stranger. The deep happiness in her heart shines out in her face. She is a ray of sunlight in the house. She gleams over it. It is airy, and gay, and graceful, and warm, and welcoming with her presence; she is full of devices and plots and sweet sur prises for her husband and family ; she has never done with the romance of life; she, herself, is a lyric poem, setting herself to all pure and gracious melodics. Humble house hold duties and ways have (or her a golden sigoifii-ance. The prize makes the calling high, and t'ic end sanctifies the nipans.— “ Love is heaven, and heaven is love.” A Rfeiv and Grant!
