Radicalism ia on the fearful inorcaae, is getting bolder and bolder every day—Conaervatiam is timid and shrinking, tremblin’ in the knees. The President has just finished Ilia tour !•» the West and hack, and barely has escaped" with his life; though he has not e-caped insult after insult, of one sort of anofhef, at almost every place he stopped at err passed tflfough. Mr. Beecher, tliat came a part of the way over tot’oirscrvatism, has backed Mjnnrc out from that, and explains himself now n bettet Radical thatl evdf. dames (Jordon Rennett, that weather oock which always shows “ whence the politiral wind comcth, and vfhitherit gocth,” has recently come out, and pronounced the dohnson policy a failure Knymond, of the 7Voles, that “boose 1” and ruled, and iron-ruled the first Philadelphia ('(invention, construes the platform thereat aJ.*pted, ns but little better, if any at all, than the Radical platform itself, Ftanton is Still fiemetary of war, and do. Holt is Genera* Judge Advocate, and the I‘risidcnt keeps them in office, or, ra'her, in poirrr, either hi cauKe they arc not so distasteful to him as they arc to us, or because he cannot afford to offend the Rudicnls by removing them. Added to all this, General Grunt keeps luost ominously muiu on the great issues be fore the country ; as if it were a mcro con temptible contest between Twcedle-dum and Twecdlc-dee, a commonplace little party mat ter between those that are “ out ” and those that arc “ in” Rrowtilow pAicluilns-that he is at the North buying up arms and nmun - (ions to artii Tennessee “loyalists” against IJcbs and Copper heads, with Andy Johnson st their head. And this he proclaims to a New Vork auditory, or a Host on auditory, with thousands crying out utnen ! to his dia bolical threats and imprecations. ifut the gloontlesf s!"gn of all is that the President himselt is letting all his brilliant chances slip “-failing to take time by the t'orff leek—trusting too much to the “ sober secbtld thought” which will never come- To conciliate the Radicals—what clso can it be '!—lie is letting that great and good tnani Jefferson Davis, rot in a filthy dungeon, when by setting 1 im free, he would make a hun dred friends, North as well as South, where tearc, *j |„ w one. it is now much to IC lie knows, „.x. u—m„„, wi || (0 and the result will bo that ho and Davis will both go by the board). If President Johnson will straighten him self up to the mighty iiecasion, and open every prison door, and call home every exile, and drive every radical irom his couucils, and swear “by the Eternal” the Union of our fathers—the 1 nion as it was—must and shall be preserved—a powerful supp rti troui all quarters, would rally to him, to sustain him and his policy—be that support the preferably moral, peaceable support, or, if driven to it, that of the bullet and the bayonet. Jict no one startle when we talk of war ; the Radicals all talk about it freely, and they intend to bring it about, ii they cannot have things their own way ; and we would he ns big fools ns cowards, not to give hack and that in earnest, toc-as good ns they send. Bkkhikrizkii. — The Atlanta Era * “own correspondent,” y clept “Wanderer,” in a letter to that journal, from New York, dated September 17th, refers to Rev. Henry AA ard Beecher as “a man most dreadfully maligned by many in the South,” and further says that “lie (Wanderer) believes him (Beecher) to he an earnest, effective Chris tian, and a man of honest views.” “AA’anderer” is nil right; for we have not a doubt that Beecher is just as gooi a Christian, as Checver, Brownlow, or any of tliat righteous set, dare be—yea, as good even as righteous Judas of old, or as that sainted pair, Attnnnias and Sapphira. Emigration to Brazil. —The Natchez ( 'ourier, of a recent date, in an editorial on the subject of “ Brazil,” says : In this nnd the adjoining county of Jef ferson no less than twenty-throe families have resolved on a sea voyage across the tquator, and new homes iu Bahia or other inviting portion of the land of promise. Dm those who do noi watch, in such eases, are in dungi r of being beguiled into great evils —and think lliev are doing the will of God in them —b\ wicked and designing men. Rut tlie evil does not lie in tha exercise of (lie true spirit of prayer, but in the men alto manage those under its influence. By prayer, men are softened into self distrust, and dependence on God, (w hich is tight), o !- offer themselves for the tontrol of men who claim to represent God, (which is wrong.) For men, under this humbling spirit of prayer, may bo manipulated—so ns t» perform Ihe greatest and noblest of deeds, or the wildest acts of favratai ism—for those whom they have confidence in as good and true men. The subjects of prayer, there fore, may be seized by evil spirits, in hvpo eritteal monsters, who nave beguiled them into confidence iu themselves, and piecipi tated into the must aw ful deeds erf horror. The pages of history are full of examples of this nature. Hut the evil does not lie in praying, but irr men who feel lit# humility that induces prayer, suffering themselves to bo deceived into dependence on wicked men, and obediently following them in their evil deed;. Hut before calamities fall on a country, as is shown by the I‘rophet, much praver at ceitds up before God at its close. Calami ties break forth on the ungodly—see Rev. 8 ; 3, 4 and ;» &e. Therefore, when the people of God are moved to pray lunch, the ungodly should he greatly alarmed. h, The War Spirit still on the Rampage. It seems very difficult for the war ieeling throughout the world to become again quiet ed. In our own country the Radicals still breathe vengeance against the subjugated and ruined South, and even arouse the mob spirit against the President and the Conser vatives of the North. In South America, the Allies and the Paraguayans continue the war with varying success. Iu England there are riots; in Canadia there is revolu tion ; iu Liberia revolt; in “ Fenian Circles” (lire ts of another Canadian war; while in Europe the prospects are that the conflict of arms will shortly be renewed. Austria—so the dispatehes say—shows had faith towards Italy, and makes itnnreasarable demands in regard to the debts of A enetia, to ivhteh Ita ly will not submit. Prussia, proud and de tiaut, because of her recent v ctoric* emphat ically notifies Austria that she will not suffer her ally, Italy, to be defrauded and insulted. And so the preparations for peace are stop ped, and preparations for war renewed. 1 hus it will be seen that the sangnirtarv sacrifices of the past tire years, both in Amer ica and Europe, have not appeased the great war spirit. The bad passions of men have been terribly aroused, and will not be ap peased. The cry is for blood more Mood— “ blood, sago, blood !” And when it will a!' stop, and rite blessed angel of Peace spread its wings over the world, are events lock.-d up in the great womb of the future I uyn.,. to I'res,* Sepf. He had taken into such habitual drunkenness, that his most earnest efforts to reclaim himself proved un availing. At length lie sought the advice of ail eminent physician, who gave him a prescription, which he followed for seven months, and at the end of that time had lost all desire for liquor, (slthongh he had for many years been led captive,) which he afterwards published, and by which so many drunkards'have been assisted to {reform, as follows; “Snlplirte of iron, five grains; peppermint water, eleven drachms ; spirit of nutmeg, one drachm ; twice a day.” This preparation nets as a stimulant tonic, and partially supplies the place of the [accus tomed liquor, and prevents that absolute physical mid mental prostiation that fallows a sudden breaking from the use of stimulat ing drinks.
