The country round this place, or rather the strip ol country about five miles wide ! and fifty miles long, is called (be (‘Gold licit," embraces a large p mi in of Lumpkin, Forsyth, and fold* counties, with oo boots In Hall and Habersham counties, arid a few isolated advanced putts in Hart, Columbia, and Caroll counties, and its bearings are northeast and south .vest. Gold Was first dis covered herein 10-'D, but public attention was not directed to it as a go! -beating re gion until l v :i|, when the Legislature made provision for the survey of tlie land in lots of forty acres e.ieh, preparatory to the dispo posal of them by a laud lottery. In IS>”, while tin- Indians still occupied the country, the survey was made. Tnc lottery w.s drawn In IK-i-I, aiid the gold lever raged with con suming violence. Kv ry one who drew a hit fatten'd InnisoH a—t.oe-u-, —ni* I —tinie aft -1 txperi nee alone proved his la'al m stake. The blanks were uum -r- it- and the prizes few, but there wore low, considering the rude an 1 primitive appliances employed, where very huge , amounts of "old were found. l-’or a couple of years the Gold licit was Considered common property, on which any lady could enter, dig and extract gold ; and it Vas not until a party ol I intcd Mates troops wire sent here to protect the mines that the fallacy of this liberal and expansive tiew of the suhiect was typ/avd. The pc* fiod of the promiscuous digging is still known as “ the intrusion.” Shortly after the al.otu.t tit of the lands, systematic digging Coiiriiciii . il and was con tinued timing the years l.Sod, lh’dl, 1 sit.">, ISdO and lS 17, by wealthy j>l;<iiti-i *v|/S transpt): ted hither a portion of tin ir labor ers, and siiperinteinL'd the opeiatioiis in person. ’1 here were, of course, large crowds of adventurers, ganibltjrs and swindlers, but there were al*o g'Cgated here at that time, from all puts ol the country, some of the most refined and enlightened men in the land, and the society is therefore tic- j scribed as having been charming. It is 1 true that morals an I religion were not as- ' siduouvly cultivated. Tiie sanctity of the Sabbath was forgotten, and the stores did their heaviest and most profitable business On that day. i lie mining operations were almost ex clusively confined to getting the gold out old * hat were called the “deposits,” which were found along the banks of the livers, creeks and little streams, at a depth of from ! two to ten feet below the surface. When ! the deposit was reached it was thrown, into j a rude machine like a child's cradle, which I was rocked to and fro wbil* a stream of water flowed through it, washing away the mad and sand and leaving the gold in a; sort of drawer at the holioin. Tiiis cradle I was generally the sole machinere eir.piovtd. When the deposits were worked out the planters and their aborers withdrew to their cot on fields. A tew pertinacious individuals ■ attempted vein mining with such pounding i mills as they were able to construct on the spot, but as a general tiling, gold mining i languished after the planters migrated. hen the gold excitement began in Cali , fornia, the Georgia mines were almost des ! erted, and during a period of nearly twenty years little was done exeept by a band of gold thieves who operated over the whole country, utterly regardless of private-rights, #*•s Unrestraine i by distinctions between fheir own and their neighbor’s property. A t'ery few, probably less than half a duz?n, ' directed their efforts to vein mining, and 1 fiiade it pay well. Within the past year, the mines have; again attracted public attention y again the j hopes of many are raised to a great height, j and capital, skill, intelligence and industry ! are being brought to bear to give tlio etrperi ment every chance of a successful issue. J lirec Northern companies arc now mak ing preparations on an extensive s-ttle for vein mining. The first, represented by Van Dyke, who resides here and is much respected, is engaged in the grganfle Undertaking of bringing the waters ot Yo- Creek from a point about twelve miles [ *bove Dalilonega to a point close to this, place, and about three hundred feet above* <bc mouth of the creek, where it fulls into j flic Chestatec River. There arc several ravines to ! be cros.-ed, varying in width From fifteen hundred feet to three-quarter? of a mile, und iii depth from two to three hundred feet, barge iron tubes, three feet in diameter, laid on ponderous tre.-tlework, span thes:< jW, anJ make the canal continuous.' he .;tr_ c.-t 0 |- these ravines is about two rm.CS from Ilahloncga, th*. trestlework, which is ”lb feet high. TOL 1, from #3UO,0l)0 to WOO,ooo—is to lease the water to those companies who propose to wash the vein mines in the hill sides. There is another company, under the di rection hereof Mr. Pride, who is said to have served in some capacity on the staff of Genera! Hosecmns, also making extensive I arrangements for vein mining. The compa ny is represented as immensely rich, and Air. Jdride is generally spoken of as a miner of experience, courteous in manner, an! diligent in bis business. This company lias purchased the ‘"Pigeon Roust Vein, ’ which is situated between three and four Ditles southwest of Rahloncga, on the west bank of Cane Creek, to the left of the roi-i from Dahlouega to Auraria. Tills vein is sup posed to be otic of tiie richest in the neig..- ] burhood. Mr. I’iide is now erecting near it the largest pounding mill ever erected In Georgia, and when it is in operation he ex pects to derive iarge yields from the mine. He proposes to work a /aige n /tuber of ope ratives, lur whom he will build a church and reboot, and engage a minister ot the Gospel, who will combine the secular and spiritual duties of school teacher uu the week nights and preacher on Sundays. Th re is a thud company which Was irtcor- ‘ porated at Washington City, represented by Mr. Peter llatiuay, late of California, which j proposes to Hume the Chestatee river for a distance ot ten miles. The operation consists in constructing a wooden race, like a mill race, ol heavy plank, thirty feet wide and eight deep, into which the river is to be turned, and which it is supposed wi.l be large enough to contain the water even Hlter a large lreshct. Thus the bed of the river, lor ten miles, w i.l be exposed for mining and the water for washing, &c., will be easily uccessib.O. Ihe estimated cost of the Hume -S 10,(1011 a m Ic.
