In resuming rr.y sketch of Mr. Davis I
ought to mention that previous to my seeing
hitn before he returned from his prison
chamber, where he is locked up every even
iiigxntl whence he returns about nine in the
morning, having, spent most of the night in
sleepless, lonely anguish, from iutense an i
exhausting tervous disease that allows of no
sleep excepting a dreamy dozing in the
early hours of the morning, .Mrs. Davis had
said that site thought he could not last
much longer.
Alter his arrival, and I had become com
posed enough to read his countenance, I was
struck with the saintly serenity of his mag
nificcnt forehead, the unearthly meekness of
his finely chiseled lips, and tomb-like pallor
of his cheeks, ’k es indeed, thought I, he
will not live many months, not many weeks
That humane and great sotii, one of tie
kingliest of the earth, wbo allowed me, then
to him an entire strafger, access to his
bed-chamber, whither he bad retired after the
arduous labors of a toilsome day, on the
simple and artless statement that a com
paratively innocent human life would be
sacrificed next morning, before he was up,
unless prevented by his interference. 11,-,.
the humane, the puro, the gifted. He, the
idol of a nation, whose holy heroism, valor,
vr»r'.soes, and virtue; will go seunding down
the cataracts of time along with the story of
Marathon, Thermopylaj, and Waterloo. Ilis
heart's Rood is wrung out, drop by drop,
through the more prejudices ot the greatest,
most generous, most enlightened Govern
ment that as ever existed in the world’s
history. Pardon uio, friends in Petersburg,
for these avowais They are the honest con
victions of my heart aid conscience. Ibe
lievc that your Government is the best that
the world has ever seen. I be ieve your
people arc tlie very cream of huutauity. It
is.because I thus believe that my leeb e
voice is raised in this whirl of excitement
to save the land of my lovo and choice, the
birthplace ot my children, front a great
crime Suppose oar construction ot the
Constitution was wrong, wg all honestly be
lieved it right. Without asking us, we all,
with almost perfect unanimity, voted foi
tom obe our President We arc all more

more guilty than he agent he selects to c«r

'tie minds ''four Northern brrthr- ri n notion
that Mr. Davis rs a wor e man per »e than
‘he average Christian or gentlemanly stainl
ird. Never was a notion more unfounded.
He s*-t h s taco as flint against a I the appeals
hi.tde to him for retali iti. u, severity, harsh
ness. In alt iuy appeals to him in behalf ol
Confederate or federal prisoners —-the latter
nm-ily charged with being spias lie was
not only candid, merciful, kind, hut his face
lit up with a pure radiance of benevolence
when I produced evidence that the accused
■was substantially innocent, though construc
tively guilty.
\\ cl! do I remember one night in au
tumn, just after t e battle of Set ell l’inee,
"'lien 1 returned from Charleston, whither ]
had "one to pioeure evidence that might
save the life of a poor Gentian, who could
hardly speak a word of iSnglisli, a ».i w |, o

reached Ihe I'resi ient’s mansion about dusk.
He was not iy. While waiting for his re
turn I fell ndleep on the stoop ■ for thr e
days and ■ three nights sleeplessness and
anxiety had utterly exhausted mu. The
President, on his return with General Lee,
awoke me, and they listened to tnp plea for
IWo long hours, and our beloved President
finally granted a pardon. (I will give this
case in full hereafter.) Hie German's
name was Henry Bruns. \\ hat made me

Yes, the simple pleasure ol doing good. I
I never look any money for any of them,

prisoners money, paid my expenses to and
from Charleston—for then 1 di not happen

things Would all have gone to the grave
rrt*!. »a unrevealed, but for tho peril I
conceive Mr. Davis to bo in. I would un
dergo any peril tb t did hot involve sin; I
sometimes think I could lay down in j life to
save his. I confess, too, that tha seefets of a
sweetly odorous past have rnirch fascination

ft tnd and noble in our poor humanity, with
all its faults ; much that was'tranquil, bal

I said that Alrg. Davis had expressed her
feirs that he could not much longer survive,
i detained, even though every possible in
dulgence were allowed him by the excellent
Jentleman and soldier oow in oommand. My
Jr»t impression, on seeing him, was even
More despondent than that convoyed by his
wue - Kvcry lineament of his features, every
gesture and motion indicated that tho de
stroyer was stealthily, surely, and rapidly
undermining the foundations of his life.—

DAILY SOUTHERN HERALD.
VOL I.
Talking about uatioual prejudices, Mrs.
Davis said she once told John Mitchel, in
relation to his hatred of the English, that he
reminded her of a mad bull erased by the
§ ght of a red flag—the name of England
was enough to make him at any time beside
himself. Yes, sai.l Mr. Davis, John Mitchel,
with all his prejudices against the English,
was a man good at heart, fill! t?f htinor, add
ol a sound understanding, 'i hat noble boy
that stood out so long an i bravelv, aUd Anal
ly fell in delensc of Charles lon, tho veXy
soul of chivalry, pure, true, and good. It
was remarked that there were many such in
all nations, that it seemed unacoountable
why such an instinct, fer such it seemed,
should exi-t at all. Mr. Davis replied, it is a
sheer product of ignorance or prejudice, or
a consequence of the wrong done by one na
tion to another. It is to forgive or ri_btly
estimate those wc have wronged consciously
and intentionally. Religion will be found
at Ir.-t to be trv.o, literally and politically, as
well as theoretically, and the spirit required
oj and exemplified by the sic-t followers of
the Saviour, Will yet he found to be the twr
mul spirit Os humanity. It is not entirely
true now, nor has it.ever been true, that an
average man is no better or worse lor belong
ing to this or that country. But the day is
coming when it will be true.
As Mi. Davis spoke on these high themes,
which were evidently his favorites, his vo ce
had a gold ring in it that told you it cauio
Ir.nit the heart,.
Speaking about his trial, lie said he had
great doubts whether they would bring
him to rial this year. It was hinted in the
most guarded manner that his life must be in
immense peiil it he must remain in t.he for
tress this winter. llis reply was, “God’s
will lie dune.”
I tol i him that whether he gave me per
mission or not, I would go to Washington
and plead with tho President to titlur pa
role him or admit him to bail, or both. He
-aid I would only annoy or trouble myself to
no purpose. Well no matter, the an
noyance and the trouble, in God’s name 1
will go, unless you deliberately command me
not, which will be the most painful shock
my feelings have hitherto underdone. Well,
1 will not lor id it, hut L forewarn you that
it will be in vain, said Mr. Davis. Tho good
Bi-hop, I saw agreed with hitn, and did not
say anything on the subject.
Alter lighting our segars, which were,
by tho way, excellent, a present from some
kind friend —wish a f w from the same hand

Bishop mentioned something about ihc Ar
