PROCLAMATION BY TIIE PRESIDENT.
Washington, Oct. 8.
By the Ihet'dcut of the I nitid States:
A Proclamation —A'migTity Go-1 our
Heavenly Father, has been pleased to vouch
safe to us as a people, another year of that
national life, which is an indispensable con

that year, moreover, has been crowned with
many peculiar blessings. The civil war that
lias so recently been among us, has not
been nnywhere rc-oper.id. Foreign inter
vention has ceased to excite alarm or appre
hension; intrusive pestilence has been
benignly mitigated, domestic tranquility has
improved, seutiments of conciliation have
largely prevailed, and the affection of loc
ality and patriotism hale been widely re
newed. Our fields have yielded qui.i,
abundantly, cur milling industry haS been
richly rewarded, and we have been allowed
to ex etui our railroad system far into tbe
interior recedes of the country, while our
commerce lias resumed its fronted activity
In foreign seas. These ffatitlnal blctsings
demand a national aCknofrlcdgemei.t.
Now, therefore, I, Andrew Johnson, Presi
dent of the United States, do hereby
recommend that Thursday, th 6 2f*tfi and y of
November next, be Set apart and be observ

Territories in the 1 nited States by the peo
ple thereof, as a day of thahk.Agivi H g attd
prayer to Almighty Go.l, with due reuicin
beranee that tu Ills temple doth every man
speak of His honor.
1 recommend, also, that on the same
solemn occasion we do humbly and devched
ly implore Him to grant to our Nati nai
councils, and to otir whole people, that and
- wisdini which alone Can lead any
nation into the ways of all good. Offering
these Natioiftl thanksgiving-, praises and
supplications, we have the divine assurance
lit at the Lord shall reign a King forever
over them ! theUl that are Weak shall be
gnid.-d in jud. moot, and such as are gentle
shall lie learn fits way; the Lord shall give
strength to llis people, aud the Lord shall
give to llis people the blessings A peace:
In witness Whereat, I hate hereunto Set
