Change op Business. —Capt. Geo. A.
Cunningham has retired from the mer
chantile business, having sold out his
stock and leased bis splendid store
honse to Messrs. Alexander & Weems.
Captain Cunningham has built up a
large trade by his enterprise and busi
ness tact The new firm will bring to
bear all the energies of two live, wide
awake young men. With plenty of
capital to sustain them, and plenty of
friends to patronize them, we see no
reason why they should not do a hea
vy business.
Presentation. The patrons and
friends of Prof. McDonald presented
him at his last Soiree, with a beautiful
Silver Pitcher, Goblets and Salver, on
which were suitable inscriptions.
Grand Vocal Concert. —From infor
mation received, we are to have a
Grand Vocal Concert given by Mrs.
R. L. Murray and Scholars. Knowing
Mrs. Murray’s qualification for play
ing, and having often listened to her
singing—which cannot be beat—we
are pleased that an opportunity will
be given to the citizens of Griffin to
listen to a Prima Dona in their midst.
Being acquainted with Mrs. Murray,
and also her scholars, we can safely say
that it will excel anything in the way
of Concerts ever given in this city, and
we therefore anticipate a very large at

to erect a No. 1 two-story brick house
on the same lot.

Second Bade. —Mr. John W. Adams,
one of the best farmers of Pike coun
ty, brought the seconcß bale of het?
cotton to town on Friday last, 26th in
stant; the first bale being brought the
previous day, by Messrs. Manley and
Mitchell, who also brought in the first
bale last year. Maj. Adams sold his
bale to D W. Patterson at 17Jc. It
weighed, at the Planter’s Warehouse,
492 lbs. He sold his first bale last
year, on the same day, to the same
party, for 31|a, quite a difference, to
be sure; but there is scarcely any dif
ference in the prices of provisions.
Epitaphioal. —Here is an epitaph
from a Milwaukee cemetery:
“Hare Uaa the body of Pater Grace,
Who died from eating Swoitzer kaae;
He flnlehed six platters, oommenoed upon seven
And exploded, Os snob is the Undom of Heaven.”
Don’t go to any expense to visit Mil
waukee to see the grave stone with the
the epitaph upon it; but it is, at any
rate, fust as genuine as the following,
from Burlington, N. J.:
Hen lies the body of Mary Ann Lowder
She burst while drinking a seidllts powder.
Called from this world to her heavenly rest;
She should have waited till It effervesced.”
Or'this, from Obildwald, Enland:
“Hen lies me and my three daughlem
Brought hen by Seidletz waters.
If we bad stuck to Epsom Salts,
We wouldn’t have been In these hen vaults.”
The hot weather has brought out
the following ode to midsummer:
Oh for a lodge in a garden of ouctnflbenl

Oh tor a vale which at mlday the dew cumber* I
Oh for a pleasure-trip up to the Pole I

Grand Jury Presentments.
Armen Term, 1870.
Jb Superior Court Meriwether County :
We, the Grand Jurors, drawn and sworn for the An
guat Term of the Superior Court, Meriwether county,
roepoctfnlly submit the following presentments;
Gratitude to a bountiful Providence, which bath
aont the fruitful showers of Heaven upon our cou.ity,
and caused our lands to promise a bountiful crop,
whereby there may be food and raiment in abundanoe
tor the laborer, and yet enough tor the Indigent poor,
should all the hearts of all our people. Peace and
plenty are once again enthrowned In our midst, and if
God would be pleased to put wisdom and virtue in the
hearts of our rotors, both State and National, we oould
hopefully look forward to the day when all onr people
would Join In pesna of praise to that form of Govern
orament which one portion of onr follow citizens are
pleaaed to term “the beat the world ever saw.”
We believe that crimes of the grosser character are,
in the main, on the decrease in our county: but we re
gret to state that, in what ignoranoo regards as small
offenses—such as the rights of “meeiun and tecum”—
violations of law have been too frequent for the good
order and peace of onr people.
The election franchise being now extended to all
classes and casts of society, and believing that Free
Government can be maintained only by an enlightened
and a religious people, we urge upon onr Legislators
to extend to the ignorant of eveiy the provisions
of at least a common school education.
Wo deprecate the collection of taxes from our peoplo
for educational purposes, and then the lavishing of
the money ao collected In wasteful extravagance and
political demagogisma, thereby unconstitutionally
robbing the people, not only of their money, but per
verting that very money to the destruction of the only
safe-guard the people have to freedom, and that la a
free and nntraramelled exercise of the elective fran
chise. We present this subject to our people, as one
npon which their liberties depond, and we urge that
they exercise, carefully, that “Eternal Vigilance" which
la the price of the “precious boon," and pray that God
may ones again guide ua in the choice of honest and
wise law makers.
By oommlttees we have examined the books in the
Clerk’s office and heartily endorse the reports of pre
vious examinations “that all his books are neatly and
oorrectly kept” The Ordinary has a multiplicity of
duties and a weight of responsibilities which renders
him, at once, the most important officer of the county,
and hence “him and his doings and writings" we have
scanned with the closest scrutiny; but naught could
we find against him; and we are compolled to give him
mede of praise, and say “Well done thou good and
faithful servant."
The Finance Committee presents a gratifying report.

Our fellow citizens can then see, at a glance, the sta
tus of their Treasury, and thank the officer who hold*
the keys, first, for the honeet dischargo of his duties,
and, secondly, for his skill in neat and correct book
keeping: producing, since ho assumed the responsi
bilities of office, a change in onr financial affairs from
absolute bankruptcy and disgrace to aolvenoy and re
spectability.
The question of Boads and Bridges in our county
bounded, as it is, on one side by mountains and a
river, op other sides and through It ran almost navi-
Hhle creek». In-every direction—has, as ever, been
dhe of a serious character for Grand Jurors to consider.
We are happy to report them all in bettor condition
than they have been Btnce our “late unpleasantness.’’

dition, and wherever there Isa defaulter, steps have
been taken to bring him up to the lino of duty. AU
other Interests of onr county working so weU we
would be glad to close this report Just here, and say
nothing about public buildings, but duty compels us
to recommend another bnrdon of taxation upon the
people. We must have onr Court House carpotted lu
order that we may hear the proceedings of our Courts
with any degree of satisfaction. We must have more
chairs for the Juries on service as well as the logal
fraternity within the bar—in addition to better accom
modations In the* lobby—and, fellow qitlzeus, anew
Jail is an unavoidable necessity. We have repaired the
old JaU time and again; it has been bored through,
ripped up and dug under so many times that, now, it
hold a drunken marauder—should he be
disposed to test its strength. We therefore, recom
mend the assessment of a sufficient amount of taxes
for
First—All outstanding debts.
Second—Provision for the county poor.
Third—Building Jail and general repairs of Court
House.
We recommend the placing of Mr. Joseph William
son, an aged, decrepit and worthy citizen, on the pau

Also, That the Ordinary demand, immediately, a n
nel settlement with the Tax Collector for the taxes of
body tools it Incumbent on them to eaU the attention
of the people, aa well as the proper authorities, to evi

In charge of the Asylum for the Insane, located at Mtl
ledgevffla, refuse to recalve any insane paupers from
our oounty, and yet fling wide thetr doors to paying
patient*. Being a State Institution, and supported
from the State Treasury, we enter our earnest prote st
against such an unjust policy. Before dissolving onr
connection with this Court we tender our thanks to
his Honor, Judge Blgby, for the promptness and ability
with which be baa discharged the duties of his office,
and this body, as one man, pray that the recent be
reavements which he has Buffered In the loss of hie

eternal good. To the Solicitor General, Judge William
A. Adams, for hi* courteous attentions to onr body
through a week of fatiguing constant labor, we are on
