A lf armed body of men
Take Henry Hanis From His Honu
and Give Him Severe Beating'.
Henry Harris, an insolent negro
living in this city, was given a severe
beating last night by a party of un
known men,
The affair grew out of the crime of
Sam Holt, and was caused by remarks
be made in connection with Holl’s es
cape from hie pursuers
The particulars, as far as can be
learned, as as follows :
Harris was talking with some white
men yesterday afternoon, when they
offered him $lO if he would tell them
where they ceu'd Holt. Harris replied
that "be did not know where Holt
was, a&d it he did, he would be d d
if he would tell them or any one else,
but would help to conceal him. He
was tired of hearing of negroes being
lynched by d d poor white people,
and if they ever attempted to harm
him, he would show them something.”
Harris continued hurling his threat*
and invectives against the white peos
pie, and expressing his sympathy for
Holt, but nothing was done to him at
that time.
Last night near nine o’clock a party
of about 25 mtn, armed with guns
and rifles, quietly made their way to
the home of Harris, almost in the
heart of this city, and forced an en
trance to the house.
Securing the horrified negro, whose
braggardoicaism had turned into pit
eous cries for mercy, they carried him
out to the western part of the city, in
the direction of the now famous tree
on which two negro rapists have
been banged.
As the party neared this tree, the
negro thought be was to be the third
victim, and bis cries made hideous the
night hours. Reaching a clump of
pine trees, the negro was bound and
then given a terrible beating, with
clubs and poles, while the muzzles of
guns were prodded in hie sides.
After be had received a lesson he will
never forget, he was unbound and the
men dispersed, after warning Harris
to bo more careful of his utterances in
the future.
Harris was seen by a Call repor
ter today, and he had u dilapidated
appearance. He could barely walk,
his face is covered with wounds and
his head is bandaged to close a fearful
gash over his left eye.
He says the attack was uncalled for,
and denies using the language attrib
uted to him. He claims he was asked
to join a party and search for Holt
but he declined, saying he knew noth
ing of the whereabouts of the negro,
and as be had to work for his living,
he could not afford to lose the time.
Those who know Harris, place no
confidence in hie tale, claiming he wag
one of the most insolent negroes in
the city, and have no doubts as to hie
having made the remarks which called
down upon bis head the just indigna
tion of the whites.

HOLT LOCATED AGAIN
e This Time He is Thought to be Be
tween Zebulon and Milner-
D A report reached Griffin this after
e noon that the negro murderer, Sam
Holt was working for Stevens Smith,
a negro farmer whose place is located
* halfway between Zebulon and Milner
B The news was brought by Mr. E. A.
' Cooper, a prominent farmer of Pike
county, who lives near where the ne
e gro is thought to be working
Mr. Cooper reported the fact to the
8 officers, and in a short time a posse
7 was formed and left with all possible
> speed to capture the negro.
i Smith, with whom the strange negro
1 is working, lives within half a mile of
! Mr. Cooper, and the supposed to be
> Holt has been seen by two of his sons
1 They describe him as being a yellow
I negro, weighing about 150 pounds,
> with one or two front teeth out.
1 Their suspicions were aroused, and
upon inquiry from Smith, they learn-
1 ed that the negro had applied for
1 something to eat and for work, and
being in need of a hand, Smith had
• employed him.
Mr. Cooper says that Holt has a
brother living in that neighborhood,
1 and the place is especially adapted for
1 hiding a fugitive from justice. The
farm on which he is working is bound
ed on one side by Potato creek swamp,
which is so thick that a rabbit can
hardly penetrate into its rank under
growth, and a man can hide in it and
have no fears of capture.
Mr. Cooper in passing through Or
chard Hill, told of the strange negro,
and be says a large posse left from
that place also.
Unless the posse which left here
captures the negro they will hardly
be beard from before late tonight, as
the place is about twelve miles from
Griffin and it was 4 o’clock before
they got off.

"I will,” he firmly answered, “if you

justified in thrashing his wife if she
- sufficiently irritates him. You have
irritated me—therefore the lath.”
, She moistened her dry lips with the

, "I suppose,” she slowly said, “that
the punishment is the same, no matter
how great the irritation may be?’
“I suppose so,” he said in a hesitata

“Then,” she harshly cried, “it is just

And before be could frame a suita

Whea a Man Stops Jumping
“Henry,” she said, and there were
what a novelist would call tears in her
voice as she spoke, “I don’t believe
you love me.”
He took the cigar from his mouth
and looked at her in surprise over the
top of his newspaper, says the Waver
ly Magazine.
“Maria," he said, “don’t be foolish.”
“There!” she exclaimed. "There’s
evidence of the truth of what I said.
‘Don’t be foolish" Did you ever speak
to me that way before we married?”
“No, my dear, I did not,” be admit
ted.
“Then,” sbe said, reproachfully, “my
slightest wish was law ; then you never
sat like a dummy, smoking a cigar
and reading a paper, when I was in
the room ; then you seemed anxious to
please me and was ever on the watch
to do little favors for me ”
“Il is true,” he admitted.
“You were never lazy then,” she
went on. “You were full of life and
spirits, and energetic.”
“My dear,” he interrupted in that
calm, dispass’onate tone that makes
the average wife want to get a poker
or a broom, ‘did you ever see a boy
trying to get an apple or cherry that
was out of his reach?”
“Certainly,” she answed, “but—”
"He keeps jumping and jumping
until he gets it, don’t he?"
“Os course.”
“But does be continue jumping
after he has got it?”
“Certainly not, there’s no need of
it.” “Well,” he said, as he turned to
his paper again, “you’re my cherry,
and I don’t see the slightest reason
why I should keep on jumping, any
more than the boy.”
She didn’t say anything, but she
thought and thought, and the more
she thought the more more undecided
did she become as to whether she
ought to be angry with him or not.
