LIGHT TOUCHES.
The construction of some Pianos and
Organs is such as to require considerable
force to produce sound. In those we are
showing the mechanical parts are so nicely
adjusted that they respond to the most
delicate touch. But they can stand the
heavier hand of a player made enthusiastic
by the richness of tone, the volume, the
parity of their notes. And the exteriors
* are fitting houses for such music. See

PERSONAL AND LOCAL DOTS-
THE MAIDEN’S HBART,
The door of many a maiden’s heart
Is slightly fastened, ill defended;
-A whispered word, a blush, a start,
The key is turned, the siege is ended.
But she, 1 worship, will but mock
At thoughts of such sweet perturbation;
Her heart has got a patent lock,
And no one knows the combination.
Ah! if the word be “love” my dear,
Which opens all our heart’s fair treasure,
I’ll strive lor entrance without fear,
For my devotion knows no measure.
But if it opes to “money,” I
Can never even dare to try it;
Your dear perfection comes too high
For me to ever hope to buy it.

The Charge of Burglary and Probably
Arson Against Bin, ~ L
; -
J. R Porter, for some time marshal
of Sunny Side, is behind the prison
bars in Griffin under serious charger.
Friday night the pupils of Prof. W.
G. Brown, of the public school in
Sonny Side, had a publio debate, which
many of the citizens attended.
About 9 o’clock Marshal Porter en
tered the school building and an
nounced that Prof. Brown’s home was
on fire.
A general stampede of the male
members of the audience was at once
instituted, all heading for the scene of
the conflagration.
Upon arriving at the home of Prof.
Brown It was found that the fire was
io Mrs. Brown’s wardrobe, ’which was
soon extinguished, but not until much
damage was done the wearing apparel.
After the fire the town soon assum»
ed its normal quietude, and by mid*
night all were wrapped in slumber,
forgetting the disturbances of the early
hours of the night.
Shortly after 12 o’clock the marshal
went to a lady’s bouse, in the suburbs
of the village, and knocking upon the
door asked admittance, stating that he
was J. R. Porter, the city marshal.
The lady told him if he did not leave
she would raise the alarm and have
him punished. He took her advice
and departed
Yesterday morning . the lady re
ported to some of her neighbors what
had happened the night before, when
a committee awaited upon Porter and
informed him that the best thing he
could do weald be to leave town and
never return. This advice ho acted
upon and skipped out.
Soon after leaving town some of
Mrs. Brown’s dress.skirts were found
in Porter’s room, and the discovery
created considerable indignation. A
warrant was at once sworn out, charg
ing Porter with burglarizing Prof.
Brown’s home, but Porter had fled.
Griffin was notified at once by tele
phone, and officers aeked to arrest Por
ter if seen. Deputy Sheriff Freeman
and Policeman Connor started at once
for Sunny Side in a buggy, to get the
tiail of the fugitive.
About midway between Griffin and
Sunny Side Porter was met, and upon
recognizing the officers sought to
escape by running. A hot chase fol
lowed, during which several shots were
fired at the fleeing Porter, who was
finally overtaken and brought to Grif
fin and placed in jail.
There seems to be no doubt as to
Porter’s guilt of burglary, and the in
dications point strongly to him as the
person who fired the house in order to
cohceal his theft.
Porter is a single man and offers as
an excuse for visiting the lady’s home
on Friday night, that he was drunk.
He will probably have lime now to
sober up.
Water in Citizens’ Cemetery.
Editor Morning Call : I was very
glad to epe your editorial in your isjue
of Feb. 25 in regard to the expediency
of running a branch water main into
lhe cemetery. This is a very much
needed convenience—in fact, it is real
ly a necessity, and should be so con
sidered by the city fathers.
The users of water thus supplied
would doubtless be willing to pay any
reasonable small tax for lhe privilege,
rather tbau do without or be compell
ed to carry water from home in jugs
and kegs, as some have been forced to
do for a long time.
The citizens who have had the mis
fortune to become personally interest
ed in lhe “Silent City of the Dead,”
and those who have yet only a pros
pective personal interest, are alike
willing and desirous to see this im
provement made.
For one, the writer would bo willing
to furnish his own hydrant, bib and
hose, if the city will lay the pipes and
turn on the water. But this ought
not to be necessary. The city sells the
lots at high prices and the money goes
into the treasury.
The owners are entitled to lhe ordi
nary advantages and faoilites that are
furnished in cemeteries located in
e
cities of the size aqd dignity of Griffin
—among which a good supply of pure,
clean water is only next in importance
to good police protection.
Let the council act, and act at once.

THE MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION.
Its Organization Perpetuated and
Philanthrophy Unwavering
A few days since the Call, at the
request of a member of lhe sseoclatioo,
spoke ot the probable disbandment of
the organization, which brought forth
the following pleasing communication,
which we gladly publish :
Griffin, Ga , Feb. 26
Editor Call :—The Ladies Memo
rial association will not dieband. The
article io the Morning Call a few
days ago to the effect that this patriotic
association would likely disband was
an error.
Ten days before the article appeared
the association held a meeting and
Mrs. Dr. T. J. Collier was unanimously
elected president of the association.
This patriotic and public spirited
lady, with the earnest assistance of
the wives and daughters of Confederate
soldiers, will continue to maintain the
noble institution and annually on the
26th of April, the graves of our beloved
defenders will be decorated with na
tures loveliest flowers, aud one of
Georgia’s gifted sons will tell of the
heroism, fidelity and loyalty cf the
boys who wore the grey, and keep
fresh in our children’s memory the
courage and bravery of those who sleep
under the sod having given their lives
in defense ol our southland.
As long as memory lasts, as long as
patriotism endues, there will be true
southern women in Griffin to sustain
the Ladies’ Memorial Association.
Let all such, married aud single,
meet the president in the parlors of
the Y. M. C. A. building Thursday af
ternoon at 3 o’clock.
A Member.
Death of Mrs. Joshua Hammond-
On the 25th of January, last, the
home of Mr. Joshua Hammond, in
Cabin district, was instantly trans
formed from a place of happiness,
peace and joy into a house of sorrow
and mourning, by the sudden death of
the wife aud mother.
Mrs. Hammond’s death was sudden
and unexpected. She was attending
to her acbu&tomed household duties,
when stricken down with paralysis and
died in leas than 20 minutes
A strange coincidence in the life ol
Mrs. Hammond was related to the
Call yesterday by one who knew and
loved her well.
She was married to her surviving
husband/Joebua Hammond, on Janu
ary 25,1866, at 6 o’clock p. m. She
was stricken down and died as the
clock struck 6 on the evening of Janu
ary 25, 1898—having been a patient,
loving wife for exactly 32 years to the
minute.
She bad many warm friends among
her circle of acquaintances, whose
hearts were crushed over her sudden
demise.
There is more Catarrh in this section of
he country than all the other diseases put
together, and until the last few years was
supposed to be incurable. For a great
many years doctors pronounced it a local
disease, and prescribed local remedies, and
by constantly failing to cure with local
treatment, pronounced it incurable.
Science has proven catarrh to be a consti
tutional disease, and therefore requires
constitutional treatment. Hall’s Catarrh
Cure, manufactured by F. J. Cheney &
Co.. Toledo, Ohio, is the only constitu
tional cure on the market, jit is taken in
ternally in doses from 10 drops to a tea
spoonful. It acts directly on the blood
and mucous surfaces of the system. They
offer one hundred dollars for any case it
fails to cure. Send for circulars and tes
