A Worse Nuisance There ia a more intolerable nuisance in the theatre than the big bat. This nuisance is the late comer Some times be is alone; he has dined heavi ly ; be has been late in deciding where to go; be saunters leisurely down the aisle; his seat is at least ssx places from the aisle; he apologizes loudly and steps carefully on male and female feet. Or be is one of the theatre par ty. He and bis friends come io the full glory of evening dress, but they come late. There are people ot. the stage, but the theatre party does not see then’ as it enters —nor do those seated near them until the party, with much ceremony, is seated.—Boston Journal. Some French Proverbs. If a girl is born beautiful she is as good as born married. A bouse without a wife or a fire ia like a body without a soul. You can never wait too long for a good meal or a good woman. Before you propose to the daughter study the mother’s character. Marry your son when you like, but your daughter as soon as you can. The bappiest couple in tbe world wou’d be < deaf husband and a blind wile It is easy to eat the wedding break fast, but not so easy to eat the week day dinners that come after. • People should never marry unless the bridegroom bis enough to boy every day’s dinner, the bride to buy tbe sapper. There are reason# Tor thinking that it will assist greatly. There are very low, outside of the fa natics, who believe that tbe Spanish government had anything to do with the destraction of tbe Maine, bat there io a very genera) belief that tbe battle ship was destroyed by s torpedo or s setenerine seine. Tbert- az* report* saady to send to Ce-pgtew ebew mg a depkwar ble condition of affair* in Cube—• conduit of affun which the United Stetes caxixit very well affurd to per mit to continue. These reports teil tA the starving of thousands of people and of tbe brutal methods which Spain is using to compel the Cubans io rec ognize her authority. With such reports before it end a strong public sentiment behind it con gress would most likely pursue a course that would lead Spain to recog nize tbe necessity of abandoning Cuba It is hardly probable that Spain would sell Cuba to the Stales even if they were willing to buy the island, but she might agree to Cuban inde pendence if Cuba should agree to pay her a part of tbe losses she sustained in trying to put down the insurrection —tbe payment to be guaranteed by the United Stales. By the time the investigating board is ready to make its report tbe United States will be in a much better condi tion for war than they are now. Their fortifications are being rtrengtbened all along tbe coast, and tbe army and navy are being put in readiness for hostilities with great rapidity. Con gress, knowing tbe United States to be pretty well equipped for war, would not hesitate to take a ve?y firm atti tude in respect to Cuba. It would be far morj aggressive than it has been at any time since tbe war in Cuba be gan. Under tbe circumstances Spain might not be so adverse to parting with Cubs, provided she could get a price somewhere near tbe amount which she has expended in trying to re establish her authority io Cuba. No doubt there will be a good deal of war talk during the next few months, but it is pretty safe to say that there won’t be war between tbe United States and Spain.- Tbe latter would make every reasonable conces sion before she would engage in war with tbe United States. Cuba, however, is certain to be ben fitted whether the Maine incident is settled peaceably or otherwise Io fact it would not be surprising if Cuba should have her freedom before the end of the present year.—Savannah News. Makins It Easy. Old John S was a rural postman in a west country district and in a rather rough fashion was also an ama teur dentist On his rounds one day be met a certain farmer about to start for a six mile ride to town for the purpose of getting an aching tooth drawn. On seeing old John, however, the farmer, distracted with pain, determined to teat the old man s skill a* a tooth puller. A pair of somewhat rusty pliers was pro duced, and after a few tugs the tooth was held up for tbe farmer to see, who exclaimed: “Why, John, you've drawn the wrong tooth! That is a sound one!” “I know that, maister, " said John, “but dow I can get as the ether handi er.’’—Pearson’s Weekly. G**aa Fsrto.
