H. BEARCY. Sbalmsneea, king of Assyria, carried away as captives all the people of Sa maria, except the old, the decrepid, the sick and the helpless who were not able to undertake the long journey of tbe captivity. The king then filled up Samaria with Babylonians, Cutbeans and other idolitors from his domin ions. In time these new comers im bibed tbe religion of the people left be hind, and all Samaria became wor shipers of God. Subsequently, when tbe Temple at Jerusalem was being rebuilt, these Sa maritaus offered to assist in tbe work, but their offers were all rejected. Tbe Jews looked down upon them with de rision Great stress was placed upon tbe “Holy Place,” and the Jew, no matter where he might be, faced towards tbe temple in his beloved Jerusalem, whenever be went to bis devotion. The Samaritans were not to be out done. They erected a temple of their own on Mount Gerezim. A great ann tipathy arose between these two peo ples. ' This much as introductory. Now, Jesus, in passing through Sa maria, became weary and sat down to rest on the curb of Jacob’s well. While there he bad a conversation with a woman of Samaria, who had come to draw water, details of which may be found in tbe fourth chapter of the gospel by John. During this conversation, the woman having perceived that Jesus was a prophet, raised tbe same old question of tbe temple worship. How natural it was that now, having a prophet of God before her, she should say : “Our fathers worship in this mountain, but ye say that in Jerusalem is the place to worship.” That raised tbe question, and, as Je sus was a Jew, she doubtless expected to get into an argument over the old question. But tbe Master said : “Wo man, believe me, the /hour cometb when ye shall neither in this moun tain, nor yet at Jerusalem, shall ye worship the father ; but all true wor shiped shall worship the father in spirit and truth, for God is a spirit.” Spiritual worship, in sincerity, was to take the place of the Jewish and Sa maritan forms and rites, and anywhere on earth was to be a place as holy as the Mountain of Gerizim, or even tbe Temple of Jerusalem. When Jesus was crucified, we are told that the veil of the temple was rent in twain from top to bottom, though it was sixty feet long and very thick, confirming what Christ had told the Samaritan woman, and theieafter the hearts of men were the only alters from which incense should arise to the throne of grace forever. Is it not a little singular that while tbe Jews and the Samaritans were very deeply interested in their dispu tations about their “holy places,” that the Ancient and Accepted Order of Masons was placing before its mem bers a pot of incense, as an emblem of a pure heart always acceptable to deity ; and taught thereby that as it glowed with fervent heat, so should their hearts continually glow with gratitude to the great benificent au thor of their existence for the manifold blessings and comforts they enjoy. We do not set upMasonry with tbe church* for it does not come in competition with the church ; we simply contrast its teachings with tbe narrow views of formalists, who had tbe light but saw it not. We believe it right to build houses and consecrate them to God for relig ious uses and purposes; but they are simply places wuere worship may be performed, and are not apart of the worship itself. True worship consists of spiritual adoration from sincere hearts. It is the ascension of incense from glowing hearts, as tbe Masons express it. God cannot be confined with brick and mortar to any particu lar place, for tbe time had come when neither sacred Jerusalem nor holy Ge rizim, with their magnificent temples, could contain His glory. We regret that even in these en lightened times there are some who have the seclusiveness of tbe Jew, in shutting out of their houses of worship other Christians. They will not give up tbe idea of tbe holy temple, though tbe veil of the great temple has been rent. They cling to an ideal past, when an ideal future beckons them forward to a higher and nobler truth. The highest, holiest place in this world is tbe human heart where God reigns, and tbe grandest temple is tbe body of that man who nearest aps proaches God. Christianity teaches . this and Masonry teaches it Those , who love Gpd and seek to worship Him can reach Him wfthoul any forms and ceremonies io any holy places and without the aid of anything extraneous io n sincere uplifting of the spirit nature to the spirit God. WOMAN’S FOREIGN MISSIONS RY SOCIETY. : BY THE SECRETARY OF THE GRIFFIN 1 DISTRICT. The bill appropriating $288,000 for pay ment of damages to tbe publishing house of the M. E. church South Las passed both houses of congress and has been signed by 1 tbe president. This act of justice upon the part of the federal government, though ! long delayed, is, nevertheless, highly ap- ; predated. This snug sum is dedicated to God and Will be utilized by our church authorities toward the advancement of His kingdom on earth. Another item of good news is Dr. Mor rison, one of our missionary secretaries, has succeeded in raising money sufficient to liquidate a large missionary debt which for some time has been hanging over our southern Methodist church. The Woman’s Foreign Missionary Society did not help create this debt, but rejoices to know that it is being rapidly extinguished. I These are favorable omens. The sinews of war are being strengthened for pushing the battle to the gates of the enemy. Our missionary decks are being “cleared” pre paratory for action. “Tinje, place and circumstance” are all favorable. The time is now ; the place is the whole earth, for “the world is our parish”; the circum stances are those that surround all willing and brave soldiers. Methodism is said to be “Christianity in earnest.” Its origin, nature, constitution and past history indicate that Methodism is committed to the evangelization of the world. In the assumption of this mighty and divinely imposed task the Methodist church is friendly toward all denomina tions of sincere Christians. The Meth odist church is in “holy alliance” with all bodies of active Christians who are seek ing to conquer the world for Christ. It follows as a logical sequence that a member of the Methodist church cannct be opposed to foreign missions with any de gree of consistency. That is what our church is for—to spread the gospel “far and wide,” “from the nvy to the ends of the earth,” “until all shall know the Lord from tbe least to the greatest,” “at home and abroad, on the land, on the sea.” “All hail the power of Jesus’ name, Let angels prostrate fall; Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown Him Lord of all.” SIOO Reward, SIOO- The readers of this paper will be pleased to learn that there is at least one dread disease that science has been able to cure in all its stages and that is Catarrh. Hall’s Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure now known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional disease, requires a constitutional treatment. Hall’s Catarrh Cure is taken internally, acting directly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system, thereby destroying the founda tion of the disease, and giving’the patient strength by building up the constitution and assisting nature in doing its work.
