Were Two Explosion*.
There were two expksaocs at a dis
tantly different character, with a very
abort but distinct interval between then,
and tto forward part erf tto ship tyas
lifted to a marked degree at tto t&e of
tto first expiosicc.
The first expkeion was more in tto
nature of a report, like that cf a gnu;
while tto txpkmon was mere
and of greater volnte.
second explosion wto to the opin
ion at tto court caused by tto partial
egplostob at two or more of the forward
magazines of the Maine.
4. Tto evidence bearing upon this
being principally obtained ipom divers
did. not enable tto court to form a defi
nite ccnehußou as to the esnditton of
the wredt. although it was established
that the after part erf the ship was pre--.
ticaUy it tact and sank in that condition
in a very few minutes after the destruc
tion of the forward part.
The following facts in regard to the
forward part of the ship are. however,
established by the testimony:
That portion of the port side of the
protective deck which extends from
about frame 30 to 41 was blown up, aft
and over to the port. The main deck
from about frame 30 to about frame 41
were blown up and slightly starhoard
folding the forward part of the middle
superstructure over and on top of the
after part.
This was, in the opinion of the court,
caused by the partial eaplwion of two
ar more of the forward magazines of the
Maine
5. At frame 17 the outer shell of the
■hip from a point ll feet from tto
middle of the ship and 6 feet above the
keel when in its normal position, has
been forced up so as to be now about 4
feet above where it would be had it
sunk uninjured. The side bottom plat
ing is bent into a reverse in the V shape,
the after wing of which, 15 feet broad
and 32 feet in length (from frame 17 to
25), is doubled back upon itself against
the continuation of the plate extending
forward.
Keel Broken In Two.
At frame 18 the vertical keel is broken
in two, and the flat keel lent into an
angle similar to the angle formed bythe
outside bottom plating. Tils break is
now about 6 feet below the surface of
tto water, and about 30 feet above its
normal position. In the opinion 61 the
oout, this effect could have been pro
duced only by tto explosion of a mine
situated under tto bottom of a ship at
about frame 18, and somewhat on the
port side of tto ship.
6. The court finds that tto loss of the
Maine was not in any respect due to
fault or negligence on "the part of any of
tto officers or members of the crew of
■aid vessel
7. In tto opinion of tto court the
Maine was destroyed by the explosion of
a submarine mine, which caused the
partial explosion of two or more of her
forward magazines.
8. The court has beep unable to < >b
tain evidence fixing the responslbnity
for the destruction of the Maine upon
any person or persons.
