THE MORNING CALL. Vol IX. No. 177. A DIFFICULT task. The President Finds it Very Hard to Restrain Conrreii. - The President is finding the task of preventing Congress from taking ao lion in the Cuban trouble a very diffi cult one. Many of the senators and representatives are so anxious to make * sensational speeches in behalf of im mediate intervention in the Cuban war that they threaten to seriously embar rass the President in hie efforts to bring the war in Cuba to an end. Apparently every congressman believes that the great majority of his constitu ants are in favor of war with Spain unless Spain shall at once recognize the independence of Cuba and remove her soldiers from the island. Senator Frye of Maine introduced a resolution yesterday authorizing the President to make war.upon Spain, and a resolution recognizing the independence of the Cuban republic was also introduced in the Senate. No doubt there will be m&ny other resolutions of a like character introduced when the report of the Maine court of inquiry gets be fore the Senate and House. The country doesn’t want war with Spain and congressmen are making a mistake if they they think it does. In the cities, in all parts of the country, the hope is expressed by the great majority of those who have anything at stake that there will be no war. A good many preachers in the Northern cities and the yellow journals of New York are demanding war, but neither the preachers nor the editors of the yellow journals would shoulder mus kets if war should come. In fact, none of these who are loudest in demanding war have any idea of exposing 'them selves to Spanish bullets They might become contractors or sutlers, or they might go to the scene of war if they were assured of safety, but they have no intention of fighting the country’s battles. That would have to be done by the thoughtful people who don’t want war if it can be avoided with honor. The other day Senator Lodge of 4 Massachusetts declared that the senti ment in his state called for prompt and decisive measures in dealing with the Cuban trouble. The Poston Her ald, in noticing the statement, said that the senator’s “misinformation on this subject is terribly profound.” The Herald then sent out its reporters to find wbat public sentiment was. Many business tpep, repregectiug different lines of industry, were interviewed, and not one was found who was desir ous that such action in respect to Cuba should be taken as would bring on war. The people of the whole country want the honor of the country main tained and they want tbe government to discharge every obligation which rests upon it, but they don’t want the country pushed into war by those who are trying to get a little cheap glory by war talk. If war should come our government should be so wholly in the right that it would have the moral support of every other Christian na tion. Its own citizens should feel that tbe course it was pursuing was the right one. The President will not hesitate to inform Congress if he finds it impossi ble by diplomacy to do, in tbe Cuban matter, wbat this country should do. It will then be time enough for Con gress to declare war.—Savannah News. — r , The Latest Developments. The latest reports from Washington do not look as warlike us all were led believe they would. It was thought that some decided move would be z made yesterday and that Spain would send her reply to McKinley’s demand that Cuba be made free. Instead of jeplying, Spain asked for more time in which to answer and our accommodating president very readily granted the request. This will delay the matter until gome time next week—until after Spain’s torpedo flotilla reaches Cuba •nd is prepared to do our navy serious damage in case Sagasta does not ac cept the terms offered by McKinley and this government does back down. Aftef placing her under arrest she informed the officers where they could find Jesse Gilmore, who is wanted for larceny, and Tom Riley, for fighting. The officers went at once to tbe place designated, made the arrests and in a short while all three were safely landed the city prison. Gilmore and Riley were tried before Recorder Beck yesterday, and the for mer was sent to the gang for three months and the latter for 20 days. It is a very cute trick of Colonel Candler and his supporters to make it appear that Governor W. Y. Atkinson and bis friends are responsible for the opposition that is generally manifest ed against him throughout the state. The truth of the matter is that Colenel Candler is himself responsible for tbe deflection from bis standard. He bad no opposition and would have had □one, save for bis own foolish, cruel and unfounded charges against his fellow Democrats.—Augusta Herald. Now does the Herald really believe that? Os course not. The Herald isn’t such a fool that it failed to understand wbat was transpiring several days be fore that Rome letter was written. It knows very well that Gov. Atkinson aroused this opposition to Candler just as soon as he returned from Mex ico to find that his friend Joe Terrell bad quit the race—because of his Iqo intimate connection with the governor. It knows that this so rgnkled in Bill Atkinson’s breast that be determined to arouse opposition to Candler or die trying. It knows that he finally suc ceeded in pushing Spencer R.Atkinson into the race, and that forthwith tbe governor’s forces lined up for him. And the Herald was among the num ber. But we don’t blame the Herald for being ashamed of it. And we don’t blame Spencer R. from denying not only kinship but all political connec tion with William Yates. The people, however, fully under stand the case. They are not so easily fooled as the Herald evidently be lieves. They know that Col. Cindler’s Rome letter simply bit the ducks be fore they lit. This statement does-not take into account the depos its in state and private banks, nor tbe immense"sums known to be held by savings banks. When these are add ed, tbe wealth of the United States is seen to be truly enormous.—Philadel phia Ledger. Would Spain Sell Out? It is quite uncertain whether Spain would accept or the Cubans offer com pensation for the independence of tbe island. The Spanish would be incon ceivably foolish not to accept anything rather than war with ns and the dead loss of Cuba. The Cubans would be wise to assent to a small annual pay ment —they cannot afford a large one —to avert the necessity of any more fighting.—New York Times. mm bnioys Both the method ana results when Syrup of Figs is taken; it is pleasant and refreshing to the taste, and acts gently yet promptly on the Kidneys, Liver and Bowels, cleanses the sys tem effectually, dispels colds, head aches and fevers and cures habitual constipation.
