Good Meawn for Delay- President McKinley >e b< lo< sharp ly odticiaed lor bis seeming y ddiaUiry Italic a with reference to Cuba, but it 1 la jnot possible that he is wiser than 1 hit critics in delaying an actual da- ‘ claration of war as long ss possible If the president really intends to temporize with Spain, then these crito * icisms are Jost, bat it is more probable that he la simply sparring for wind; so to speak. In other words, it is appar. ent to all that this government is not . yet prepared for hostilities. We have ( much to do before we are ready for the fray, which, if It must come, promises to De short and decisive President McKinley has evidently had the proper conception of the situ- ( ation, and for weeks past has been do- < ing all in bis power to remedy it a« 1 rapidly as possible- But, unlike the nations of Europe, the United States has never kept her army and navy in constant fighting trim, ao that when a conflict threatens she hu much to do to make ready. A case in point is a report that coined from Washington to the effect that, ihe president baa admitted to a congreeamMh, who was urging an im mi diate declaration of war, that there wis not enough ammunition in the coo a try to last ten days in cased con tinued hostilities He stated further more that our agents hnd been unable to obtain aoy considerable amount abroad and that Spain bad some lime ago secured all that was obtainable and that now that country was well supplied. ‘ . If lrup> this alone is sufficient to jus tify the delay that is caused by the president’s tactics Al any rate, it is very clear that it will not do fcr this country to go off half cocked. Better this delay than to fire a gun before we have ammunition enough to back up such ao act. In the meantime, the president should, and no doubt will, remain steadfast in the conviction that hostil ities in Cuba must cease. He yields nothiug by referring the report on the Maine disaster to the Spanish govern ment. But gains a few mtye days in which to make ready for tbs struggle that still seems inevitable —Macon News.
