Among them wa* Camwander Brownaon of tte Detroit It is mid tta t after tta conference thia commander came back to hi* ship smiling. However that may be, ta certainly smiled next morning. J tut after S o'clock that teen tog—it was calm aa could be, almost— tta Yankee naval ship* were seen to be to a bustle. Tta canvas awnings faded away, and in tta night certain sound* were beard aboard them, at which vari ous listener* put their hand* cup shaped behind their ears to listen harder. On tta morning of tta Wth there was a change to tta appearance of tta Yankee fleet It tad taken off it* coat, waist coat and shirt, so to speak, and was just eying itself when day dawned to see bow good its training tad been. Tta insurgent ships Aquidaban and Tamandare were up tta bay above Vi an* island with their cables short, ready to trip. The Trajano and Guana bora, aa well a* tta fleet of armed tugs, were crowded with men from the gar risons of Cotea* and Villegaigon. Tta Liberdade flew toe little blue ensign, for Admiral de Gama was aboard tar, lying with the Trajano and Guanabara north of Enchado* island, a few yards from tta American bark Amy, one ot the boat* out by tta blockade Tta Parahyba waa lying with it* teeth, so to speak, at tbe throat of toe Yankee barkentine Good New*, Commander Brownson on tbe Detroit got bi* ship under way, having hoisted anchor at a o’clock, and headed toward toe city between Enchado* and Cobra* island*. Her crew was at her guns, and a* eager a lot of men aacmeonM see anywhere at that time. The anchor 1 got fouled in tta Detroit’s hawse bole, i and that was ample excuse for proceed ing slowly, which was convenient while a couple of insurgent tugs made > a sputter at tbe northern littoral of the city, a* they had been doing a long time. After a couple of men had been killed aboard the tugs they drew back, and the Detroit, with everything clear, rounded Enohados island and came along starboard side to starboard of the Trajano. The men looked through their sight* and then up at Commander Brownaon on tta bridge. ■ The story of what they saw is a tradition in the navy now and always will be so long as men like Brownson are in command. The commander was smiling. A man on the raised a mus ket and fired a bullet over the heads of sailors pulling' away in a boat with a line from the Amy to a ship at anchor that the Amy might be warped to tbe forbidden dock*. Two heavy insurgent tegs came around with their rams pointed at the side of the Detroit. On the San Francisco the red flag of battle had been run up to the fore truck in stops. A quartermaster stood with hi* > band on the halyards eager to break it ! out, with his eyes fixed on the admiral, who was looking at tta Detroit for the sign which would cause him to give the quartermaster the order so ardently de sired. Wbeh the Insurgent shot was fired, Commander Brownson turned to tbe gunner at a one pounder, and with a perceptible increase of the ■mite ordered tta man to shoot into tbe Trajano at the water line six feet abaft the stern. Tta order was misunder stood, and tta shot went across the in surgents’ bow. Thereupon Captain Brownson bailed: ‘‘Trajano, ahoy I” he shouted. “If you fire again, I will return the fire, and if you persist I will sink you. ” , Tta Trajano’s crews were excited. If a nervous finger had pulled a trigger, the fight would have been on. But tbe shot did not sound. The sail ors on the Amy's yawl waited to see what they were to do next. “You go ahead, ” Commander Brown aon shouted, “and I’ll protect you!” The sailors went. “Aim at tbe Guanabara!” ordered Commander Brownson. And the greasy black muzzles of tta Detroit’s broadside and tta two pivot gun* swung around, looking bigger and bigger every mo ment, till they stopped, leveled at the cruiser. One particularly nervous gun crew aboard tbe insurgent was oonspicu oug. Commander Brownson waved hi* hand, with a half smile, and this crew toUtato. titan tta Yankee ships led the way tbe docks, with other ships crowding with them, and after awhile tta re bellion collapsed. But tta sailors who 'were on tta Detroit at that time have told tta story of Commander Brown son’s smile to other sailors, and these to still others, till it ha* rippled to ev ery water where tta starry flag files, and it is heard with marked interest by men cn the ships of other nation*—men who have eaemamiling men fight.—New York Sun. • ....
