The revenue officers who look after
tbe governnP’ol’s interests io Cook
county, Tennessee, are much annoyed
by a female moonshiner. Bbe openly
violates the law, and has a notice pos
ted on her dour to tbe effect that she
deale in liquors; still tbe officers can
not send her to jail. The reason is
that she weighs 600 pounds, and there
is not a door in tbe jail big enough for
her to get through. - • .
Il would not be surprising to see at
Washington, before a great while, a
movement to keep Fitsbugb Loe out of
a high appointment in the military in
the event of war. Gen. Miles’ friends
are understood to be very jealous Os
hie prestige, and they would probably
not relish seeing in the field a milita
ry commander more popular than the
conqueror of bitting Bull.
Dr. Beeblee, of Statesboro, says that
in the eutpmer of H 39 the bed of tbe
Savanna|^ri ver dried up and a man
» by the name of Sholes plowed it up
and planted turnips in it; that on tbe
nightwf April li, 1849, forty-nine
years ago, there was a heavy enow
that killed corn a foot high. On the
first day of Hay, 1838, sixty years ago,
a heavy frost killed all tbe crops.
Germany’s new naval construction,
to oooupy six years, entails an expen
diture of 8116,000,000. Tbe naval es
tablishment is calculated to include
eighteen battleships, fifteen cruisers of
tbe first class and twenty-nine small
• cruisers or gunboats. There will also
be coast defense vessels, torpedo boats
and torpedo boat destroyers, dispatch,
transport and training ships, and alt
other miscellaneous * vessels in ade
quate proportion.
Borne of the moat popular bull fight
ers of Spain, it is announced, will de
sert the arena and shoulder rifles in
defense of their country, says the Sa
vannah News. Joo. L.Sullivan,express
ed the desire, some timo ago, to form a
troop of American prise fighters and
march to glory under tbe Stars and
Stripes. It the two countries can pre
vail upon their bull fighters and prise
fighters to go to tbe front, the hostili
ties will not be without mitigating
circumstances, after all.
There seems to be no lack of patri
otism among tbe rank and file of the
people of Georgia. Oapt. Brown, act
ing adjutant general, is being beseiged
daily With letters, io which the writers
tender their services to tbe govern
ment in tbe event of war. Nearly all
of these letters are from men who
want authority to organise companies,
regiments and brigades. Few of
them offer their services as privates,
but tbe privates may come up later
when tbe war cloud bursts.
The Destruction of the Maine.
Consul General Loe's testimony
doos not directly accuse the Spanish
government of ordering the destruc
tion of tbe Maine, but it places the
responsibility pretty close to it, and
will despen the conviction in Ameri
can minds that Spain is both morally ■
and technically guilty of tbe offense.
But if war passions were not so high <
tbe nation would see tbe reasonable- 1
nose of giving the matter full investi
gatioc and fixing tbe responsibility
beyond denial before proceeding to
extremities. —Philadelphia Ledger,
