don, who was on duty at tbe time, (
found the fugitive near tbe compress ,
shortly after the difficulty and com
manded him to surrender, but instead
of obeying tbe officer he made off at
foil speed in tbe darkness. The offi
cer drew his pistol and fired five shots
at the fleeing’negro, but he made bis 1
escape.
The police were informed yesterday |
afternoon that the neg-o was at tbe ;
home of a friend near Experiment, ;
when Officer Connor secured a oon* 1
veyance and two deputies and went 1
out to secure the game. The negro 1
saw tbe officers coming and made an*
other wild dash for liberty, this time
going into a thick woods. After com- 1
mandieg him to halt, tbe officers
opened fire ou him with pistols and
winchester rifles, but that only quick*
ened tbe speed of tbe flying man acd
tbe officers soon gave up the chase
and returned to tbe city.
It is not known whether Joiner was
hit or not, but it ia certain he had
more lead whistling around him than
the average man would care for.
Bia wife is in a critical condition,
but the wounds may not prove fatal.
