Colt’s Machine Guns.
The principle of the Colt guns, the
very latest weapon of modern warfare,
give* no bint of tbeir murderouenesa.
A three foot blued heavy barrel with a
piatol butt and trigger, and a calibre
the siie of pea, this barrel fitting into
brass pivot* that permit a (weeping
aim, np, down or around—that’s all.
Yet through that little aperture,
•mailer than a baby’s finger, are pro
jected invisible death engines that
would cut platoon* of men in piece*.
Tbs gon is literally a death but*
■aw when swept slowly from right to
left to right. If held stationary for a
moment tbe discharge assumes tbs
force of a shrapnel shell that never
Mop, and ordinary torpedo boats may
be sunk by ita force. By tbs ride of
tbe barrel is a wooden box. Io tbia
-1000 Lee rifle cartridges with tbe
■mall calibre, ateel bullet*, charged
with smokeless powder, are coiled on
tap* like an endless cartridge belt.
Tbe end of the tape is palled sidewise
through tbe gun, the trigger is pulled
and then the gun shoots, ejecta and
loads without further human agency.
Alter that the gunner simply direct*
tbe sweep of fire.
A few inches from tbe tnuzz’e is a
rent down into a chamber underneath
tbe barrel. Al the first discharge a
•mall percentage of the gas proceed*
through tbi« vent, and force* out a
lever of a Winchester rifle, and tbi*
flying lever, in turn, propel* tbe me
chanism and aa the spent cartridges
are ejected other* are drawn in and
•truck by tbe h*mmer. In an instant
tbe gun pour* out shot like stream
from a boas, each cartridge exploding
the next at * speed of 200 a minute.
Directed at a file of men np to 700
yard*, tbe effect ia terrific, for the bul
let* of ateel, that look like tiny pencil*,
will go through six men.
Borne time ago Lieut. Pond tried tbe
gun at the New York navy yard. He
had twenty inch** of oak aod a tbr«e
eigbta inch steel plate. To make rare,
ba added another one-eighth inch
plate. ..Then be couldn’t find tbe bul
let*. Upon search be found that they
had gone through the twenty inches
of oak, tbe three eighths ioeh ateel
plate, two side* of an old iron boiler,
and the brick walla of the building.
