Belford, Middlebrook & Co., of Chicago, are publishing weekly a series of beautiful portfolios, devoted to the AMERICAN NAVY AND CUBA. The illustrations are reproductions of photographs, with introduction and descriptive texts, showi ing all the vessels of our navy, the MAINE, as she majestically rode the waves before her destruction, and all of her officers. CUBA, THE QUEEN OF THIE AN TILLES, is illustrated in all its phases, from the captain general’s palace to the hovels of its starving wretches—shown as it is today, not as it will appear after Sampson’s fleet has bombarded it, that will come later. , We have made exclusive arrangements with the publishers whereby we will ftir nlsh our subscribers with these beautiful portfolios, containing 16 reproductions in each number, at 10 cents for each series. The regular subscription price is 50 cento, and those wishing them, who are not sub scribers to our paper, can secure them at Uj&tpnce. And they are well worth 50 cento. We have samples of these beautiful works of art and history in our office which we would be glad to show you and take your subscription for the entire series or as many parts as you wish. I Carlo a big retriever, opened the ball l bv killing one of the Ostlak doga He •waggerod about among the pack and ex- cidal, or rather canlcidal, proclivities,,l tied the dead dog round hto nook. This, however, he evidently viewed as an exceb lent arrangement, especially devised for the arctic, where the food supply to defect ive, and at once proceeded to make a cold lunch of his late adversary, looking wp at me with grateful ey a. evidently thinking that it was vary ec > siderate of Jackson thus to provide him v. itb a larder right at band. After this the dead dog was re moved, and Carlo was always decorated with a muzsle. I afterward made a good sledge dog of him, but ho could not stand the Severe climate, and, although the doc tor made a blanket coqt for him, the poor old chap died sledging during the first fortnight in spite ot it The rest of the pack were hardly leas bellicose, but conducted their battles on lines hardly in accordance with civilized warfare. With the exception of two or three dogs, I always had the entire pack chained up, having taken out a large sup ply of English chains, but I found these quite inadequate to restrain these compar atively small dogs. One dog would break loose and then commence a fight with an other. The whole'pack would become wildly excited, and one chain after another would snap, and all would then fall upon the losing combatant. The result would be another dead dog.— Geographical Jour nal. _______. FUNERAL NOTICE. The friends and acquaintances of James G. Andrews, Dr. J. N. Harris •nd family, Capt. Geo. R.
