A pleasant social event was the en
tertainment with which Mrs. Whitely
Kincaid complimented the Social
Circle at her pretty home on the
corner of Eigtb and Poplar streets, on
Thursday afternoon. There is al
ways an air of charming hospitality
about Mrs Kincaid’s home which was
again noticeable on this occasion—
quantities of Jacquimenot roses were
used in the beautiful floral decora
tions over balls, drawing-rooms and
dining-room '
Mis Kincaid is one of our most
popular young matrons and is a
beautiful woman—her coloring is ex
quisite, her hair is of that reddish
gold color known as Titian, and her
voice is clear and very sweet. ,*
On Thursday afternoon Mrs. Kin
caid received her guests in a lovely
gown of black organdie over taffetas,
and carried white carnations.
Little Misses Iris Woodruff and
Louise Johnson very charmingly
served the refreshments of pine-apple
and atrawberry cream, and bake,
They were daintily’attired in white
Organdie.
Those present beside the regular
members of the society were Mis.
William Davis, Miss Lois Hudson,
Miss Slaton.

Tbe tally bo ride with which Mr.
Joseph Neely complimented tbe Thir
teen Club yesterday afternoon, was at
tbe same time a pretty compliment to
a number of other friends. Mr. Neely's
home is in Louisville, Ky., but be is a
frequent visitor to Griffin where, it is
needless to say, bis many friends al
ways heartily welcome him. Mr. Neely
comes of that Kentucky family distin
guished by tbe refinement which is the
birthright of tbe best social position,
and tbe advantages of wealth. Pert
sonally he is most attractive, and has
tbe chnrming distinction of being tbe
only m&'e member of tbe Thirteen
Club. After a most delightful ride to
Sunny Bide, Mr. Neely and bis guests
accepted a delightful invitation to tbe
beautiful home of Miss Evelyn Kell,
who is a member of the club. That home
with its many treasures of travel, is
charmingly suggestive. Works of art
and curios of various kinds attract tbe
eye on all sides. To this old world
charms, there was added yesterday
fresh fragrant blossoms. Beautiful
rose branches with a wealth of bloom
lifted themselves from vases of rare
pottery, and other flowers tastefully
arranged, added their color to tbe
general effect. Miss Kell is a most
attractive joung woman, she has large
grey eyes, and a mass of soft, golden
brown hair, and possesses a lithe grace
ful figure. She is a delightful hostess
always and Saturday evening was at
her best. At tbe close of a very happy
evening, elegant refreshments were
served, after which tbe pally returned
to tbe city. Those present beside the
hostess and her bsautiful sister, Miss
Carrie Kell, were Misses Mollie White,
Janie Brawner, Opal Smith, Mattie
Smith, Ethel Watt, Bessie Clark Braw
ner, Mamie Mills, Jacksonia Mills,
Corinne Nall apd Mr. Joseph Neely.

J,
pAFAYErTB RELEASED
ShefHad Permission to Enter the
I Harbor at Havana.
jiv West, May 7.—Commodore
Wafton yesterday afternoon received
tram Washington to instantly (
releMk tbe French mail steamer La- 1
Fayette and to send ber to Havana ua
dsr-tecort.
Tfae capture by the gunboat AunAp
olis turns to have been an unfortunate i
iocmnt, resulting from mistakes, but
no protest has been made to tbe repre
sentative of tbe French government in
thflj nited States. The officials here
deettte that this will close the affair.
It appears that before the LaFayette
•ail* for Havana tbe French legation
.in Washington was instructed to com
municate with tbe state department.
Tsis was done and permission
grafted to the steamer to enter and
discharge her paasengers and cargo,
wilb tbe understanding that she would
take on nothing there.
Instructions for the fulfillment of
this agreement were sent from Wash
ington to Admiral Sampson’s squad
ron, aud it was only learned today,
after tbe capture was made, that they
werj never delivered.
» Mrgterday afternoon United Blates
Commissioner Otto, United States
District Attorney Stripling and a
number of other Federal officials also
went out to tbe LaFayette, examined
her papers and cabled the state de
partment for instructions. They
came without delay in the form of An
order to Commodore Watson.
Os the 168 passengers on board the
LaFayette seventy-six are for Havana,
nearly all being ybung Spaniards*
who say they are going to Cuba to
engage in mercbantile pursuits.
When surprise was display
such was tbeir mission at this time,
they merely shrugged tbeir shtftilders
and vouchsafed no further explana
tion.
HAnleitsr Ohurch.
In the absence of the pastor, the
morning services will be conducted by
Mr. W. A, J. Knowles. Iu the even
ing at 7:30 o’clock, Prof. C. W. Curry
