War as an Instructor.
Not only is it true that peace baa
her victories, bat also that war baa
duties in the ways of peace. The first
step io war is to instrnct soldiers. The
military regiment strictly followed by
thousands of young men can be an
invaluable tonic, physically, mentally
and morally, to our people. Subordi
nation of their individual to the wel
fare of the whole is a valuable lesson
for a democracy. Simplicity of diet,
regular exercise and out-of door life
will infuse etrepgth into flabby mua
cles and rouse the blood to active cir
culation. Rapid increase of wealth
and luxury have given a certain de
morilisation to yell-io do familiee,
which self denial and eelSimposed
hardship will rapidly counteract.
Our volunteer troops will gain a
practical knowledge of sanitary re
quirements which will be invaluable.
They will be given inslrucliona by
competent autboritiea on the actual
garments they wear, as well as the
food they eat. It ia an established
fact that during the civil war the
health of the southern people during
all the period el enforced privation
waa unexampled salubrity.
It is only necessary to regard the
magnificent physical development of
our regular troops to realise what ac
tual military service may do for volun
leer organisations.—Chicago Timee-
