A great iron mill corporation of Ban
Francisco announce* that it will go
out of buaineo# became it cannot cum
pile with the rutile of the eastern sec
tion oKha country. Tbe probabilities
are that the mills of the south are
. making eastern mills bustle to bold
tbeir business, with the result that tbe
westerners have been left in tbe com
petition. Meantime tbe southern
mills are growing and prospering.
It will probablf |e Spain's policy to

When we bar* got through with her,
her troubles will not be over. Bbe
will have other urgent matters to at
tend to, io which ships will be needed.
Bbe has no vessels to spare; and it is
a forgone conclusion that she would be
forced to get along without any that,
might once come within fighting range
of the guns of tbe Americans.
jU is announced that tbe new Sp*n«
isb cabinet will inaugurate a more
active war policy, aays the Savannah
News. But-how can that be possible!
Are not the Spanish typewriters now
working over time inditing notes of
complaint to the powers, and is not
Cape Verde squadron bumping itself
dodging in and out among tbe Wind-,
ward and Leeward Islands! Can
anything be more active than activity,
or more vigorous than vigor!

Without indulging in what Eu
ropeans are apt to consider a national
propensity—to brag-—it may be confi
dently said that Great Britain and tbe
United State* united in arma would be
easily more than a match for any com
bination of powers likely to be formed
against them. Perhaps, alter all, tbe
strongest argument that can bo urged
in favor qf such an alliance would con
stitute of itself tho best possible guar*
anty for the preservation of the peace
of the world.
A new development in competitive
yellow Journalism is to be noted. Tbe
race for priority is so sharp that the
yellows are leaping wildly into tbe so«
tore for news It is now pretty much
all "may"news. Havana* "may” bo
taken tomorrow ; Sampson "may” find
and sink all of ths Spanish ships in
the course of the next tsenlyfour
boors; the Queen Regent "may” abdi
cate and ran away to Vienna. There is
no limit to the possibility of "may”
news. It is even in line with tbe
seboato to say that that tbe yellow
seasstion makers may become decent
papers one of those days
