Our Lord, before He was taken up into tbe heavens, commanded His dis ciples to go-and teach all nations'to observe the things He had commanded them to do; to baptize them in tl.e name of the Father, the Soo and the Holy Spirit, and promising lo be with them to tbe consummation of the age Thio was the het commandment tbe Master gave, but like tbe tender, lov ing words of friends who pass the veil of death, they linger longest- in our ear, and, echoing and re-echoing like notes of bogles sounding through mountain passes, they shall never die. So strongly was the thought im pressed upon the apostles that it was necessary for the Master to urge them not to leave Jerusalem at once, but to wait for the baptism of the holy spirit, for, said He, ’ John baptized you with water, but ye shall be baptized with tbe holy spirit not many days hence After the holy spirit is come upon you ye shall be witnesses unto me. both in Jerusalem, end in nil Judea, and in Samaria, aud unto the uttermost parts of the earth.” Ae the last words escaped His lips they looked and beheld Him passing into the clouds. The apostles waited, and soon, on tbe day of Pentecost, carpe tbe wonderful manifestations, during which three thousand people were converted and added to the church in a single day, and all were baptized as promised. It is under this command—these parting words and admonitions—that the gospel is propagated, and under them continue to be propagated until all the nations of tbe earth have beard the gospel of tbe Christ. *When tbe apostles looked over tbe field, what a stupendous undertaking lay before them I Just around them was the Jew ready to crucify them. Ruling over them wm> Roms—proud> imperial Bonn—which was the—mis tress of tho knoWn world, which had its own god ahd its own civilisation. To the east lay tbe great nations of Persia and India and China. To tho northward were our own Saxon ances tors, and still in tbe regions beyond nations dwelt in ignorance and in sin. There was everything to discourage tho apostles, but they were true to tbe Master’s commandpmd went forth in His name conquering and to conquer* But for this spirit ws Anglo Ssxons would have been worshiping the gods of our fathers. The truth is, we are so fresh " from heathenism ourselves that tbe Very names of our days are mere appella tions of their heathen divinities. Tues day is named for Tuesco, Wednesday for Woden, Thursday for Thor, and Friday for Frigga—gods of the Sax ons. .But the brave, good men of the ear ly days of-Cbristianity camo through the fires of persecution, through the ravings of wild beasts, through tbe sacrifice of martyrdoms to bring us the good news, and there will ever be found among the bravest and the best men who will carry forward tbs gospel to those who still sit in the land of darkness aud despair. The truth is, if Christianity was not an emination of tbe great divine, yet its attendant blessings are so many that common humanity would induce us to spread its benificence among the nations of the earth. There are well meaning Christians who oppose missions for tbe reason that they prefer to teach their own nations; but they do err, because this is not a question of preferences. The command is to teach all nations, and to go to tbe uttermost ends of tbe earth with the instruction. Some oppose missions because un der the doctrine of their church they cannot see the necessity of it; but tho doctrine of no church can come be* tween tbe man and the Master’s com mand You may not understand tbe hidden mysteries of God’s plane, but you can understand the simple com mand, "Go teach all nations to observe tbe things I have commanded you to do.” A child can understand that, and the children do understand it,and they are obeying tbe Master all over tbe land by contributing their little mites to send the word of life to the utter most regions Y»f the earth. Some say it costs too much, bAgW man has yet fathomed tbe value of a -fegabkn soul. Whaklarge sums have been expended to regcue men from the depths of tbe burning mines?. What large sums have} been expended to bring them safelAfFOin the regions of the north? Can it cost too much to save one hu man loul from the darkness of despair? Some say missions accomplish too little. Alas! this is the cry of ignor ance. The Missionary spirit made England and France and Germany and America the masters of the world. It is fringing light into Japan, and tbe Islands of the Sea. Ah! but they may say they are of the rest of the worlcf—that of course it did good to us, acni England and Germany and France, etc., but it will not do goodTfn Cbiui. Can we not at least hope that what Mid good to so many will do good to al if Lst the Christian people of aO denomination* wake up to the neces sity Os action—-immediale action in the interest of missions and trust all results to God. The question is not whether tbe heathen will receive tbe gospel—it is whether you will send it. Whether you (resder) will obey the Master, or follow the excuses of your own making to your own destruction. XJwxAwa man who has had great! financial tosses. I Rave seen him look over his securities that turned to noth ing under tbe rapid declines of panicy times. I have seen him run up sud denly with some stock be bsd taken in a college for (the education of the women of China—a transaction he had forgotten. Then I beard him say "Thank God that is good jet.” That is a treasure moths cannot corrupt nor thieves break through and steal. So it will be with you friends: give I give!! give!l! and God will be a shield to you in the days of trouble, and a shelter in the time of the storm.
