11M0LER SWEEPS THE STATE LIKE A KANSAS CYCLONE!
K
K'
S Candler has carried Spalding coun
it to, and that is not all; he will receive
I enough of the counties to discount
» I any ring that might try and pull him
B °° t!
| In spite of the vituperation that has
® E been heaped upon him, and the mis-
K representation here in Spalding, the
® .grand old man comes out victorious,
H just as the Call has predicted all
■’ elong.
U There is never a doubt that so long
II as honest methods continue to prevail
I in Spalding county, ring rule will
■ never, gain a stronghold and the car
| pet bag politician can never stand up
before the true patriots of democracy,
f Tbit race, so far as Col. Allen D.
I Candler is concerned, has been purely
I conducted io this county and tbe vin
I dication of tbe methods employed by
hie co-workers wm freely given at the
■ polls yesterday.
E As we have contended, tbe county
K would go as It has, and our position
f has been justified by tbe legal voters
| of the county alter the most rigid reg-
f istration that was ever known in this
section.
Ao the retains came in last night a
stereoptican gave out tbe results and
| At was loudly applauded.
The majorities could not be learned
Hast night neither could tbe vote for
tetate bouse officers be ascertained.
We give as clcse as we could gather
last night the majority for Candler io
the different districts, with two to bear
from:
Africa—Berner, 38; Candler, 90.
Orrs—Berner, 20; Candler, 14.
Cabins—Berner’s majority, 12.
? Union—Candler, 50; Berner, 31.
Mt. Zion—Candler’s majority, 12.
Griffin—Candler, 152; Berner, 124.
Candler’s majority in. tbe aix dis*
tricta heard from is 93. Line Creek
and Akins have not been beard from
but they will not materially change
Candler's majority.
Through a telephone message re
ceived last night from tbe Atlanta
.Journal at a late hour it was learned
.that “Candler is carrying the state
’like a cyclone, and Cook and Stevens
in advance with a close race between
’Turner and Renfroe.”
Tbe Call is satisfied with tbe result
*4o Spalding county and feole assured
■that tbe time will come when it can
he said in every election of impor
tance: “As goes Spalding, so goes the
alate.”
Thia will prove true io this contest
beyond tbe shadow of a doubt, and
Hon. Allen D. Candler will be tbe
next governor el Georgia. Tbe re
turns from all over tbe stale at a late
hour last night indicate as much.

A private fn Co. F was arrested Sat
urday night for sleeping while on
guard duty. When brought to trial
no legal evidence could be obtained
against him and be was set free.
Notwithstanding yesterday was elec
tion day, little was heard of politics in
tbe camp. Tbe Macon companies bad
made arrangements with the executive
committee df Bibb county to have
their voles cast in camp and the re
turns cent to Macon to be consolida
ted. However, this passed off very
quietly. The men voted and returned
to their tents, where they bad been
since their long march in tbe early
morning.
The tegular march of yesterday
morniqg was unusually long and the
men were required to double quick a
great deal. They were throughly tired
when they reached their quarters on
the isturn and little else was done
during tbe day until the battalion
drill in tbe afternoon.
The new tents arrived yesterday
morning and were immediately un
loaded ipto the quarter masters de
partment. They will be substituted
fort be old ones as early as convenient.
There is considerable comment
among the officers io camp regarding
certain articles being published by
newspapers throughout tbe state about
the poor rations the men are receiv
ing. Some my the men are starving
and as a consequence organizations
are being formed all over th< state to
send boxes to tbe soldiers.
These are appreciated and come in
very nice but tho men are not starv
ing, nor are they wanting for anything
to eat.
There will be a very interesting
game of in door ball at tho camp
ground at 2:30 o’clock thio afternoon.
It will be between two Savannah com
panies and promises to be most inter
esting. z

ACCIDEHTALLT KILLED.
A Twelvc-Ysar Old Boy Shoots a
Companion.
News reached this city yesterday
morning of a sad accident which oc
curred at Mo Williams’ Mill, about six
teen miles south of Griffin, Sunday af
ternoon.
Several boys of that neighborhood
were bathing in tl e poud, among tho
number being Hiram Giasier and John
Neely, both about 12 years of age.
Hiram came out of the water before
his other comrades and after dressing
picked up a pistol belonging to some
of the party and extracted, as ha
thought, all the cartridges from the
weapon.
As John Neely stepped out of tbe
.water and started to where his clothes
jvere lying, Hiram pointed the pistol
at him and pulled the trigger. There
was a loud report and bis little com
rade fell dead at bis feet without so
much as uttering a groan. The ballJ
entered the right and passed entirely
through the braio, causing instaot
death. ■ r. . ’«
Hiram was wild with grief when he
realized that be bad accidentally taken
the life of bis friend, and the whole
community is mourning over the un
timely death of one of its brightest and
most beloved boys
The Santiago Heroes.
Tbe navy, in the present war, ia
sustaining its brilliant reputation
made in previous wars. Its history is
a glorious one, full of each deeds
of daring as make the hearts of Amer
icano thrill with pride. Only a few days
dgo Admiral Dewey won a victory in
Manila harbor which excited the ad
miration of the civilised world. On
Friday, in Santiago harbor, there was
performed a deed of daring and hero
ism which will take a place in history
alongside of the most glorious deeds
of our navy. It was a deeff’Whieh
compelled the Spanish admiral, Car
ver*, who io bottled up iu Beatjago
harbor, to pay tribute to Amerieau
courage and heroism—the trißMh
which a brave man ia always ready to
pay to true courage wherever found.
Our dispatches yesterday morning
gave an account of the oinking of the
Merrimac, a coal ship, in tbe harbor of
Santiago. It was not clear from the
dispatches whether the Merrimac was
sunk by order of Admiral Sampson or,
having been sent to find out the posi
tion of the mines in the harbor, was
sunk by a Spanish torpedo. Our dis
patches this morning make it clear
that tbe Merrimac was sent into the
harbor and sunk for the purpose of
obstructing tbe channel, and prevent
ing the escape of the Spanish squad
ron.
And who are tbe eight men who
guided the coal ship into the channel
—who took their lives ip their bands,
as it were, in order to carry into effect
tbe plans of Admiral Sampson f We
do not know tbe names of tbe eeamen,
but that of tbe officer in command is
Lieut. Hobson. Tbe names of tbe
seamen will soon be known through
out tbe world. All volunteered for
that special service, and no one of
them had reason to expect that be
would escape death. They were to
guide the coal ship directly under tbe
guns of tbe forte, and sink her in the
narrow channel. That they accom
plished their mission successfully in
tbe midst of a shower of shot and
shell and escaped with their lives—
rowing directly from tbe wreck to tbe
flagship of tbe Spanish sdmiral—bor
dem on the marvelous.
Tbe world admired tbe courage
with which the Spaniards stood by
their guns at Manila until their ships
were wrecked by flames or sank be
neath the waters of the harbor, but
these men who carried the Merrimac
into tbe jaws of death were heroes
such as the world bolds aloft as exam
ples and remembers.—Savannah News.
